NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

Falling behind has been the norm for the Cardinals this season, and Tuesday night against Alvirne was no different, as Bishop Guertin trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but found a way to rally for a 64-52 win over the Broncos.

Down 41-31 with early in the third quarter, the Cardinals (7-5) outscored the Broncos 34-11 the rest of the way, including a 21-1 run that saw Alvirne go more than nine minutes without a field goal.

"We've been playing from behind all year," Bishop Guertin coach Jim Migneault said. "We just play from behind for some reason. I can't figure it out. It's one of those teams."

Chad Olivieri led five Cardinals in double figures by scoring 17 points, while Jack Zimmerman added 14 points, including a 3-pointer with 4:26 to play that gave Bishop Guertin its first lead, 47-45, since it was 8-7 in the first quarter. Alex Arika chipped by scoring nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and Kyle Gavin and Tim Hinrichs each added 10 points.

Alvirne (8-3) got 15 points from Evan Hunt and Connor Hodsdon added 11 points as the Broncos scored just 16 points in the second half, less than what they had in each of the game's first two quarters.

"It's frustrating when in each of the first two quarters we scored more than we did in the entire second half," Alvirne coach Brian Lynch said. "We couldn't find a rhythm offensively and made some bad mistakes and some turnovers. We didn't play good defense and didn’t rebound the basketball.

"They packed it in a little more in their man defense. It's not anything we haven't seen before, we just weren't able to hit shots and made some stupid turnovers."

The Broncos took control of a close game late in the first quarter, going on a 12-4 run to take a 19-12 lead at the end of one. Alvirne stretched the lead to 13 points, 30-17, by outscoring the Cardinals 11-3 in the first 3:49 of the second, with Hodsdon scoring the final five points of that run.

It was still a 13-point lead (34-21) for the Broncos with two minutes to go until halftime, but the Cardinals closed the half on an 8-2 run to get within seven points at the break.

"They were getting up and down the court early," Migneault said. "Second half, we played with a lot of poise. Defensively, we just shut them down, and offensively, we moved the ball so well. We were getting looks inside and we weren’t settling for 3s. The ball was moving. (On defense) we shut the middle down. By doing that, we had people in good position to rebound."

Alvirne pushed its lead to 41-31 early in the third, but the Cardinals started chipping away, and a basket by Arika in the final minute of the quarter cut the lead to 44-42\. Zimmerman opened the fourth with a chance to give the Cardinals the lead, but after getting fouled on a made layup that tied the game, he missed the free throw. Andrew Wetmore made one of two free throws at the other end to put Alvirne up 45-44, but the lead wouldn't last.

Bishop Guertin had several chances to take the lead, getting four offensive rebounds on one possession, but couldn't take advantage of any. After a timeout, Zimmerman nailed an open 3 to give the Cardinals a 47-45 lead, and Arika scored six straight to give Bishop Guertin a 53-45 lead with 3:02 to go.

A layup by Wetmore with 1:30 to play made it 59-47 Cardinals, and gave Alvirne its first field goal since a putback, also by Wetmore, with 2:40 left in the third. A 3-pointer by Hunt made it a 60-50 game with just under a minute to play, but the Broncos couldn't get any closer as Bishop Guertin went 4 of 6 from the line in the final 53 seconds.

"I'm really happy with the way we're going right now," Migneault said. "We're starting to get there."
