NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team went into halftime of Friday night's game against Nashua North looking to regroup.

After the Cardinals went up by as many as a 11 points in the first quarter, the Titans punched back, going on a run to turn the second quarter into a back-and-forth affair.

With time to collect itself during the break, Bishop Guertin stormed out of halftime to open the third quarter with a 21-6 run to take control of the game, and after a few interesting moments late, held on for an 81-70 win over Nashua North.

Connor McGowan had 15 of his game-high 34 points in the third quarter, in which the Cardinals outscored the Titans 28-13 to turn a 36-34 halftime lead into a 64-47 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

“Defensive intensity and we had a little bit of a lack of execution, too,” Bishop Guertin coach Will Horne said of what changed at halftime. “There were some plays that we’ve been working on all week to prepare for their defense and we didn’t execute. We did a great job in the second half. I’m proud of the kids.”

Eli Youssef added 14 points for the Cardinals (2-2) while Luca Fabrizio and Sam Woodward were also in double figures, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Andre Kargbo led North with 22 points, 13 of which came in the second quarter to help the Titans (0-4) get back in the game. The sophomore hit three 3s in the quarter, the first of which capped a 14-2 run and gave North a 21-20 lead.

Josh Sullivan also had 18 points for North and Tyson Hoang had nine markers.

But after responding to Bishop Guertin's early run in the first half, North had no answer in the second.

“We were able to get some transition points and get some early offense,” North coach Kyle Tave said. “But then in the third quarter, tip your cap to BG. They locked it in and said you’re not fast-breaking on us anymore. They’re going to make every possession hard.”

That was the way the game started. After North took a quick 4-2 lead in the opening minute, Bishop Guertin went on a 14-2 run to go up 18-7 with just under two minutes remaining in the first.

The Titans were able to get back within seven points before the end of the quarter and opened the second with eight straight points to take the lead on Kargbo's first 3\. The Cardinals finally ended their drought to go back in front, but Kargbo hit another 3 to give the Titans a 24-22 lead.

The lead would change hands six times in the quarter but Bishop Guertin ended the half outscoring North 5-1 to go up by two at the half.

Youssef and McGown scored back-to-back to open the third quarter, and after a North turnover, Woodward added two more to make it 42-34 Cardinals and force the Titans to take a timeout just 2:13 into the half.

“We moved the ball well,” Horne said. “We found the open guy. I think that was the biggest key.”

The Cardinals pushed the lead to 20 points on a basket by Fabrizio with 4:44 remaining, and at the next stoppage, Horne emptied the bench. North scored six straight points in under a minute to make it 76-62 and the Bishop Guertin first string went back in.

The went back up 17 points when Horne made a lineup change again, and although North was able to get within nine points, the Cardinals held on for the win.

“It’s a rivalry game,” Horne said. “It’s a big environment for some of those guys, going in to it for the first time. We’ll work on those things. The kids played great.”
