Bishop Guertin beats Londonderry for second straight title

The Bishop Guertin High School girls tennis team won four of six singles matches and got one win in doubles to defeat Londonderry 5-4 in the Division I championship match Thursday at The Derryfield School in Manchester.

The win was the 34th in a row for the Cardinals (17-0) and gave them their second straight championship.

The Lancers (14-3) got wins from freshmen Ana Milosavlijevic and Cassie Burbine at No. 1 and 2 singles, but Bishop Guertin won the other four matches, including a 9-7 win at No. 6 from sophomore Allison Murphy, who beat Londonderry's Cassandra Cronin.

Other winners for Bishop Guertin were Lauren Hayward, who defeated Amanda dePasquale 8-5 at No. 3; Elizabeth DiCesare, who knocked off Erica LeBlanc 8-1 at No. 4; and Julia Filler, who won 8-1 over Amanda Merde at No. 5.

Milosavlijevic came back from 4-1 down to beat Bishop Guertin's Jennfer Dai 8-5 at No. 1 in a match that took nearly two hours, while Brubine beat Katie Wong 8-0 at No. 2.

The Lancers cut the Cardinals' lead to 4-3 when Burbine and dePasquale won the No. 1 doubles match 8-1, but the duo of Filler and Murphy won the No. 3 match 8-3 to clinch the title for Bishop Guertin. Milosavlijevic and LeBlanc won the No. 2 match 8-5 to round out the scoring.
