CONCORD - It was the kind of play the Bishop Brady High School field hockey team has been trying to make all season long.

And in Thursday's Division III preliminary-round game against Kearsarge, it was a good thing for the Giants that they did.

Early in the second quarter, Bishop Brady created a turnover in transition, with Kimble Rose getting the ball into the circle to Olivia Lazear. The senior was alone with just Kearsarge goalie Luna Landers to beat and she did, and the No. 6 Giants made that score hold up for a 1-0 win over the No. 11 Cougars.

Bishop Brady moves on to the quarterfinals, where it will face No. 3 Mascenic at 3 p.m. on Monday in Ipswich.

"The goal was beautiful," Bishop Brady coach Kelly Owen said. "We’re trying to do give-and-goes, play small ball a little bit because we’re not a big hitting team. We want to have that passing connection to score. That worked out beautifully (Thursday)."

The score came just 1:46 into the second quarter, and while the Giants (10-4-1) had plenty of opportunities to add to that lead in the first half, they were unable to. Bishop Brady had 11 penalty corners on the day, but couldn't capitalize, in part thanks to Landers, who finished with 10 saves.

"Our defense did a great job," Kearsarge coach Chelsea Williams said. "They had a lot of pressure in the first half and our defense did a great job holding them off and keeping us in this game."

But the Cougars (5-10) ran into some problems in the first half that plagued them all year. While they made adjustments at halftime, and were able to control possession for long stretches of the fourth quarter, the Cougars were unable to tie the game.

"It’s been a consistent theme for us this season that we’ve struggled in the midfield, which happened a lot in the first half," Williams said. "We made some adjustments in the second half, which I think is where we had more success. I wish we’d made those adjustments sooner, because I think we might have had more opportunities to score.

"I think we played hard, most of the game we fought hard, we just had the same struggle in the midfield. I should have made that call sooner."

Kearsarge got strong play from seniors Ella Dumais and Tori Wooten.

Ava Archambault finished with three saves for Bishop Brady while Camdyn Despres also played well.

But with a handful of players competing in their first playoff game, there were moments that Owen felt could have been better for the Giants.

"We were tight," the coach said. "They didn’t have a penalty corner all game, but we didn’t capitalize on the ones we had. That’s one of our things. We can have 10 or 15 a game and we’re struggling. We just played a little tight. In the playoffs, anything can happen. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day."

Bishop Brady hopes to keep that in mind when it travels to Mascenic on Monday. The two teams haven't played since Sept. 3, 2021, a game won by the Giants, 4-2, also on the road.
