The players delivered with both in the third quarter of Saturday's CHaD East-West NH High School All-Star Football Game. Michael Maroun (Souhegan) blocked a punt that rolled out of the end zone and Jeremy Henault (Goffstown) returned an interception 24 yards for another score to help West build momentum on the way to a 29-6 win over the East all-starts in the ninth edition of the all-star game at Saint Anselm College. The West leads the series 6-3. Henault finished with a game-high 14 tackles, including two for loss, and was named co-MVP along with his twin brother, Jarrett (Goffstown), who was 4 of 7 for 76 yards passing and rushed for a game-high 98 yards. Austin Jain (Souhegan) added 101 yards and a touchdown through the air on 7 of 11 passing, as he connected with Alex Zwickau (Bedford) for a 3-yard scoring toss in the fourth quarter. Zach Picard (Goffstown) scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to give West the lead and Solomon Sanchez (Bedford) connected with Jake Trahan (Merrimack) for a 50-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter. "It came down to these guys coming together in a week as a team," Bowkett (Souhegan) said. "They were going out to eat together. That first double session, you could hear the laughter, you could see guys smiling. While the offense put up some numbers, it was the defense that led West, as it held East to just 43 yards rushing and outgained its fellow all-stars 385-213 overall. "The reality of it is, we didn’t do enough offensively to help our defense," East coach Kevin Hebert (Spaulding) said. "Our defense played really, really well. They gave up two big plays the whole game and we didn’t set them up for success. They’ve got some good football players over there." Kyle Gora (Alvirne) led East by going 16 of 27 for 170 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions while he also had 26 yards rushing. The score came on a 78-yard completion to Westin Lippoled (Windham) that came with 11:27 remaining and cut the West lead to 23-6. Noah Poulin (Salem) had 14 tackles to lead East, including five tackles for loss with three sacks, while Chandler Sutton (Spaulding) also had three sacks. Jason Compoh (Nashua South) also had a big day defensively for West, recording four tackles for loss, including a sack on East's first drive of the game that helped set up West's first touchdown. After East picked up a first down and was moving the ball, a fumbled snap and Compoh's sack on back-to-back plays forced a punt, and West needed just three plays to take the lead. Jarrett Henault's 44-yard run set up Picard's 2-yard scoring run to make it 7-0 with 6:31 left in the first. East had a shot to get on the board right before halftime, but two passes by Gora into the end zone fell incomplete. On the final play of the half, another bad snap on a field goal attempt left East with nothing going into the half. "You look at these games, it comes down to 10 plays really," Hebert said. "The bad snap on the first series, it seems inconsequential. We’re getting the ball moving, and we hurt ourselves there. The fourth-and-short down here in the first quarter. They went for it and got it, and then obviously at the end of the half, it was a big missed opportunity by us. Maybe we could have managed the clock better, but not getting points hurt things. The big plays, the blocked punt kills you, the pick-6 kills you." Both teams went three-and-out to open the second half and East was about to do it for a second time, with Zach Jones (Pelham) kicking from just outside his goal line. Maroun got free to block the punt and the ball landed in the end zone. Players from both sides had a shot at it, but the ball found its way out for a safety and a 9-0 West lead. East's defense made a stand on the ensuing West drive, forcing the ball over on downs at its 8-yard line. Facing a third-and-13, Gora was able to scramble for a first down, but on the next play, he was picked off by Jeremy Henault, who stayed in bounds and went untouched down the sideline for the score. "I made sure of it," he said of staying inbounds. "I was looking down. After that, I knew I was off." After a first half where the coaches felt like a few points had been left off the board, the scoring on special teams and defense was a bonus. "Not necessarily have to happen, but we had a good feeling it was going to happen," Bowkett said. "Our defense was balling out. Once that happened, we had a sigh of relief. We could still be aggressive and make sure everyone got in." That score made it 16-0 with 2:39 left in the third and West forced another punt on the ensuing East possession. On the first play of the fourth, Sanchez took the ball on a sweep and fired a pass to Trahan, who got behind a surprised East defense, for another score and a 23-0 lead. East responded with Lippold's touchdown reception but West recovered the onside kick at the East 49\. With Jain in at quarterback, West used up 4:29 before he connected with Zwickau on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line to make it 29-6 with 6:56 remaining.
