AMHERST – When teams are as evenly matched as the Souhegan and Bedford high school girls basketball teams were Tuesday night, the outcome comes down to one intangible that gives either side an edge.

For the Sabers, it was their experience.

Souhegan broke open a four-point game in the fourth quarter by holding Bedford scoreless for almost seven minutes, and pulled out a 44-31 win over the Bulldogs in the Division II opener for both teams.

Christan Wojtas led the Sabers (1-0) with 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half and Jane White added 11 points as Souhegan’s experienced group of juniors and seniors held off a Bedford team that started two freshmen and has five on the varsity roster.

“I think the way we finished strong, we have the experience,” Souhegan coach Jeremy Faulkner said. “It was a good fourth quarter. When we needed to dig down, we finished the game. I’m very happy with that.”

Bedford got eight points each from McKenzie Brown and Ali Glennon while Haley Driscoll chipped in with seven points.

But what was frustrating for Bulldogs coach Scott Sarsfield was that Bedford could have had more.

“A little disappointed, I think,” he said. “We know we’re a good team and that we can matchup with Souhegan. We just had a hard time shooting. We didn’t show the kind of composure offensively that we needed. When we had some looks, we weren’t finishing.”

Bedford was just 12-of-28 from the free throw line for the game, including 2 for 10 in the fourth quarter.

Faulkner noticed, and while he felt fortunate that Bedford was missing shots, it was also a wakeup call to his team when it’s on defense. Some of those defensive problems stemmed from the foul trouble that plagued Tori Forrest and Lauren Cordts throughout the game.

“It (foul trouble) took both our post players out of the game and they (Bedford) attacked the hole more on us,” he said. “I’ve seen McKenzie Brown play throughout AAU and she had so many open looks come out. A 15-foot jumper is like a layup for her, it’s automatic. I’m glad the ball stayed out of the hole. It affected our rebounds. They more than doubled us on offensive rebounds and that’s what hurt us.”

The score was close through the first quarter until a 3-pointer by Wojtas gave Souhegan a 9-4 lead with 1:34 left in the frame. But Bedford scored the last four points of the quarter to make it a one-point game after eight minutes.

The Bulldogs did the same thing just before halftime. Souhegan went up 18-13 with 2:39 left on two putbacks by Forrest and a free throw from Ashley Tighe, but Bedford closed the half on a 5-0 run to tie the game at the break.

“That’s what I guess we’ll feel pretty good about, that we’re fighters,” Sarsfield said. “The final score doesn’t say how hard we played.”

The Sabers were able to hold on to a four-point lead going into the fourth quarter, and they slowly started to pull away, going up by nine on another basket by Wojtas and a 3 from White. Bedford wouldn’t get its first points of the quarter until under two minutes remained, but by then, Souhegan had stretched the lead to 13.

Both teams are back in action on Friday, when Bedford travels to Oyster River and Souhegan hosts Laconia. The Bulldogs and Sabers meet again during the regular season on Feb. 18 in Bedford.
