When Kelsey Berry returned to the volleyball court for the first time this past summer, she was scared.

After a sprained ankle ended her basketball season early, Berry spent weeks on the sidelines, first watching the Hollis/Brookline High School basketball team and then her club volleyball team.

While the time away motivated her to get back to her pre-injury level, it also made her a little nervous.

“My first volleyball match, I was absolutely terrified,” said Berry, who is a senior at H/B this year. “But I had a very helpful coach of mine tell me you’ve got to power through it. Just relax. It goes away.”

Berry’s injury was diagnosed as a third-degree sprain and she was out for eight weeks, finally getting back to full strength in June.

“It was really emotionally hard,” she said. “I had to watch my basketball team go to playoffs without me. I played club volleyball and I was the libero for that team and I had to let them down.”

Before she could return to game action, Berry went through six weeks of physical therapy, going three times a week. But once she was able to play, Berry had to see another physical therapist because of a problem with the Achilles on that leg.

“It was quite a process,” Berry said. “It motivated me more than anything. This is my senior year, and I love this team. It made me so much more hungry to play volleyball.”

So far, she’s been a key part of the Cavaliers’ strong second year in Division I. With a little more than a week left before the end of the regular season, H/B is 13-2 and second in the standings. After taking a year to get a lay of the land one division up, Berry believes the Cavs are well-equipped for the postseason.

“This year, we know what (Division I) is – it’s just a number,” she said. “No matter what happens during the season, we want to go out and feel like we did everything that we could to have a successful season. Right now, it’s about being the best that we can be, and if we do that, we can win.”

The Cavs host Spaulding Friday night before finishing the season next week against Concord and Manchester Central. The Division I playoffs are scheduled to begin Oct. 26.
