BEDFORD - Drew Shapiro scored with 76 seconds left in the game to help the Bedford High School girls lacrosse team hand Bishop Guertin its first Division II loss of the season, 14-13, Monday morning.

Shapiro's goal came after the Cardinals (3-1) had rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the game with two minutes to play. The goal was the third of the game for Shapiro and teammate Danielle Ayers had four goals to lead the Bulldogs (2-1).

Aleah MacKay also had three goals for Bedford while Alexandria Fink and Caitlin Heaps each had two.

Bishop Guertin got four goals from Nicole Pettiglio while Callie Santos added three goals and an assist and Morgan Karanasios had three goals. Allies Solms had two goals and an assist and Jess Lambert added a goal while Kayla Lambert made 19 saves in net.

The Cardinals got a late goal in the first half to tie the game at 7 at halftime, but the Bulldogs came out strong to start the second. Bedford took the lead a minute in on a goal by Heaps and Ayers made it 9-7 with another goal 33 seconds later.

Santos pulled Bishop Guertin within one less than two minutes later and the teams traded goals until Bedford took its largest lead of the second half, 12-9, on a goal by Ayers with 14:17 to play. The Cardinals took a timeout and scored two quick goals to pull within one with 11:48 to play.

Both goalies came up big on the following possessions and neither team could find the back of the net until MacKay scored with 3:20 to play, giving Bedford a 13-11 lead. The Bulldogs took a timeout and the Cardinals got right back in the game just nine seconds after the break, pulling within one on a goal by Karanasios.

Jess Lambert's goal with 2:02 to play tied the game and Bishop Guertin was able to stop Bedford on its next possession. But a turnover gave the Bulldogs the ball and Shapiro found the back of the net with 1:16 left to give Bedford the lead.

The Cardinals had one more chance with about 30 seconds to play, but another turnover ended the possession and Bedford was able to run out the clock.
