BEDFORD - Jason Robie left Saturday's scrimmage having learned a couple of things about his Nashua High School North football team and at least one thing about Bedford.

The Bulldogs defense is fast.

"Those kids fly around," Robie said after the Titans and Bulldogs ended the preseason with a morning scrimmage. "That's going to be one of the top defenses in the state this year.

"If you have to choose between size and speed, you choose speed any day of the week, especially with the way today's offenses are going. Everything is spread and those kids run very well. If they make a mistake, they're fast enough to get back in the play."

The teams each had their starters on the field for two series, which consisted of 10 plays from the 30-yard line and then a drive.

North held out a couple of players as a precaution and tried to move others around, but the Titans' first team offense struggled to move the ball on its two possessions against Bedford's first string.

"From an offensive standpoint, we've got some work ahead of us, but we stayed pretty vanilla," Robie said. "We tried a couple of things. There were some guys that we didn't play and we tried some guys in some different spots."

Bedford's offense came out slow on its first possession, as North's defense kept the Bulldogs in check. Bedford picked up a first down on its drive, but the Titans held and forced a punt. On the second drive, the Bulldogs took advantage of miscues by the Titans to score and put together a drive that ended with a 12-yard scoring run by Mike Vailas.

Despite the slow start on the first series, Bedford coach Kurt Hines liked the intensity his players had at the start of the scrimmage.

"It was a good tempo," he said. "Our guys came out and we didn't make too many mistakes. I think across the board, we have a good mix of veteran players and young players. We're getting comfortable now and we've got to go and run with it."

The best news for Bedford might have been the continued progress of Vailas at quarterback, as he had a better day throwing the ball than he did in the Bulldogs' previous scrimmage.

"The big question mark to this point has been his passing game, and he proved (Saturday), he will be the total package," Hines said, "but he's still a work in progress."

Robie felt his defense played well - including Dana Salem (cornerback), Jordan Alexander (defensive tackle) and Matt LaVallee (defensive end) - despite the breakdowns.

"We got to some third-down-and-long situations and we gave up some big plays," Robie said. "We're in man-to-man coverage and the guy that's supposed to be covering the back runs the wrong way. If he does his job, he covers the back and it's not a touchdown. We have a jump ball where the corner who has deep coverage decides to come underneath it, the ball goes over his head and they score a touchdown. That's the game, you've got to make plays."

Both teams begin the season on Friday, as Bedford will host Manchester Memorial and North will travel to Timberlane.
