# Bedford, Londonderry front runners for D1 girls basketball title

Ali Glennon and Bedford are looking to win back-to-back championships.

Many have tried, a couple came close, but no one was able to hand the Bedford High School girls basketball team a loss during the Division I regular season.

Four more wins, and the Bulldogs will win their second straight title with an undefeated season. Will it happen? Not if Londonderry, Bishop Guertin, Nashua North or Salem have anything to say about it. Of course, the Bulldogs beat all those teams by double digits during the regular season.

Here is how the brackets looks, and our predictions for a winner.

### First Round: Wednesday, March 5

- **No. 16 Keene (4-14) at No. 1 Bedford (18-0):** The teams should be pretty familiar with each other, having played in the last game of the regular season on Friday. That game, which was in Keene, was a 56-32 win for Bedford and was the Bulldogs' 36th win in a row. In its 18 games, Bedford has won one game by one point, another by two points and the rest by an average of 34.1 points.
- **No. 9 Manchester Memorial (11-7) at No. 8 Trinity (11-7):** It's a matchup of teams [heading in opposite directions](https://www.nh-highschoolsports.com/who-is-hot-and-who-is-not/). Memorial lost its last three games of the regular season, while Trinity won five of its last seven to jump ahead of the Crusaders in the standings. The Pioneers won their regular-season meeting, 51-47 on Jan. 31.
- **No. 13 Spaulding (6-12) at No. 4 Nashua North (14-4):** This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. After starting the year 3-0, Spaulding won just 3 more games the rest of the way, as the Red Raiders struggled to score points. Spaulding's best chance to pull of the upset will be to slow down the Titans, who are led by guards Taylor Choate, Adaeze Okorie and Sara Cordova. North is 14-1 when scoring 50 points or more.
- **No. 12 Dover (8-10) at No. 5 Salem (13-5):** Both teams ended the regular season playing some good basketball. Dover had won five in a row before losing its final two to Bedford and Trinity. Salem ended the year with a five-game winning streak, including a win over Pinkerton that gave the Blue Devils the fifth seed. These teams played on Jan. 30, also in Salem, with the Blue Devils winning 48-36.
- **No. 15 Exeter (4-14) at No. 2 Londonderry (15-3):** The big news for Londonderry is the return of senior Aliza Simpson, who was out for most of the second half of the season with a leg injury. Without Simpson, the Lancers were able to hang on to the No. 2 seed. With Simpson, they can be a real challenge to Bedford, if both reach the championship game. Exeter, which got into the tournament after winning a tiebreaker with Concord, lost to Londonderry 66-39 on Feb. 7
- **No. 10 Alvirne (10-8) at No. 7 Winnacunnet (12-6):** These teams met just eight days ago, also in Hampton, with Winnacunnet coming away with a 59-50 win. It was part of a late-season stretch in which Alvirne lost three straight and five of seven. The Warriors finished the season 8-2, averaging 64.4 points in those eight wins.
- **No. 14 Merrimack (5-13) at No. 3 Bishop Guertin (14-4):** It's a playoff matchup of first-year coaches at Merrimack (Courtney Cheetham) and Bishop Guertin (Jeremy Faulkner) who were both on the staff when Souhegan won back-to-back titles in 2011-12\. The Cardinals, who won the regular-season meeting 62-32, have very quietly put together another successful season, despite a lot of turnover from the year before. Merrimack went through even more change, but at midseason, the Tomahawks were 5-6 and looked like they might challenge for a higher seed. A seven-game losing streak to end the season erased a chance at that.
- **No. 11 Manchester Central (8-10) at No. 6 Pinkerton (13-5):** When these teams met in the regular season, Central was over .500 and Pinkerton was challenging for a top four seed. The Astros won, 52-31, but lost four of six down the stretch to fall to sixth. That loss started Central on a season-ending stretch that saw the Little Green drop five of seven.

**Most likely first-round upset:** The nearest thing might be No. 9 Memorial knocking out No. 8 Trinity, which is technically a lower seed beating a higher one, but too close to really be considered an upset. No. 6 Pinkerton seems like it could be vulnerable for an upset, but No. 11 Central was on a similar slide heading into the playoffs. Likewise, had No. 10 Alvirne played better down the stretch, the Broncos might have been the upset pick, as they have the talent to knock off anyone. No, the guess is that all of the top eight advance to the quarterfinals.

**First-round winners:** No. 1Bedford, No. 2 Londonderry, No. 3 Bishop Guertin, No. 4 Nashua North, No. 5 Salem, No. 6 Pinkerton, No. 7 Winnacunnet, No. 8 Trinity.

**Final four matchups:** No. 1 Bedford vs. No. 5 Salem; No. 2 Londonderry vs. No. 3 Bishop Guertin.

**Championship:** No. 1 Bedford over No. 2 Londonderry.
