NASHUA - The final score from Tuesday's girls volleyball match goes into the books as a sweep for Bedford High School, but the Bulldogs' win over Bishop Guertin felt like anything but a 3-0 match.

Bedford won each game by two points (25-23, 30-28, 26-24), and in every game, the Bulldogs had to rally late to beat the Cardinals. Bedford was down 23-22 in Game 1, 27-26 in Game 2 and 24-23 in Game 2, but was able to do enough to get the win.

"It can go either way in a game where you only winning by two and we were lucky to have it go our way," Bedford coach Sarah Stank said. "I don't know how many games this season have gone to 30 points. I think it gives them some confidence, but it also gives them some practice playing under pressure, which is always important."

One of those moments came in the final game. With the score tied at 24, Kayla Moreno stepped to the line for Bedford (5-4 in Division I) and served up back-to-back aces to end the match. And in Game 2, Courtney O'Connell (seven kills) stepped up to win a couple of points for the Bulldogs.

"I'm really proud of someone (Moreno) who can go out and play to win regardless of the score," Stank said. "(O'Connell) has been great for us offensively and it's a nice little spark for us after our first three servers to come in and light it up a little bit."

Bedford also got a big game from Rachel Larrivee (seven kills) while Althea Gere added 20 digs and three aces.

Bishop Guertin (3-5) got six blocks and five kills from Mackenzie Sweeney, while Jenna McCormack had 13 assists and Lexie Cambray had five kills.

"Those games could have gone either direction at any point," Bishop Guertin coach Abby Rosen said. "I told the girls its a game of ups and downs and you have to overcome adversity. They played very well. They were very resilient."

The Cardinals held the lead for most of the first game, but Bedford kept it close and seemed to gain momentum after a block by Lily Condylis cut the Bishop Guertin lead to 23-20\. The Bulldogs won the final six points to take the game.

In the second game, Bedford took the lead early and held on, going up by as many as six points (20-14), but the Cardinals rallied and took the lead, 24-23\. The teams traded points the rest of the way, until the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of a couple of Bishop Guertin mistakes to grab the game.

Bedford got out to an early lead again in Game 3, but this time, Bishop Guertin came back earlier, tying the game 7-7 and outscoring the Bulldogs 11-6 to go up 18-13\. Bedford surged ahead 23-22, but the Cardinals regrouped and went back up 24-23, forcing Stank to call a timeout.

"It was a big timeout for us," she said. "I told them they had to earn it, every point. Back row has to talk to front row and we have to cover our hitters. It's not a one person job. Everyone has to be communicating. Whether it goes our way or not, we need to meet in the middle."

The Bulldogs did and escaped with a win that was tougher than it looks.
