DERRY - The Bedford High School girls lacrosse team has a number of players capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs on Friday, they had possession quite a bit to spread the scoring around.

Five players scored for Bedford (No. 2 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll), led by Julian Bell's four goals, and the Bulldogs picked up a big early-season, 13-6 win over Pinkerton (No. 4).

Regan O'Brien added three goals and three assists and Olivia Matthews also had three goals for Bedford (3-0), which got out to a 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the game.

"I thought we came out really composed and with great energy," Bedford coach Christine Hodgdon said. "We had a lot of balanced scoring, we dominated the draw really early. Defensively, we had a couple of missteps matching up with their solid players. I think we recovered from that nicely. I’m really proud of the way that, we were tested (Friday) and we rose to the occasion."

Ellie Enners also had two goals and two assist and Sydney Grogan added a goal as the Bulldogs won 17 out of 21 draws. Pinkerton (1-1) had just six offensive possessions in the first half, scoring on half of them, but the Astros trailed 9-3 at halftime.

"In the first half, we only had it six times," Pinkerton coach Katie Bourque said. "We have to get there. Our offense is good and the kids work well together, we just have to make sure we have possessions.

"I liked the way they responded in the second half. We stuck to our game plan and saw a lot better things. The ball moved better on offense and we got some stops on defense, and our goalie was outstanding."

Pinkerton goalie Lauren Sweeney made most of her 13 saves in the second half, with the Astros trying to come back. Down 11-4 after a goal by Matthews with 19:45 to play, Hailey Schnider scored back-to-back goals to get Pinkerton back within five with 15:33 remaining.

Sweeney came up with some key stops after that, but Pinkerton was unable to capitalize.

Schnider finished with two goals and Ali Lamphere had three while Hannah Lisauskas had a goal and two assists. Cait Seleny also had two assists for Pinkerton.

Bell scored the game's first two goals in just three minutes and O'Brien made it 3-0 just over five minutes into the game. Pinkerton took a timeout, but the Astros weren't able to get a possession until after Bell scored to make it 4-0.

Pinkerton won the ensuing draw and kept possession despite having shots hit the post twice. After the second one, Lamphere was able to get free for a goal to put the Astros on the board with 15:27 left in the half.

But goals by Matthews and Bell just 55 seconds apart gave Bedford a 6-1 lead, and the lead stretched to seven, 9-2, after Enners and O'Brien scored back-to-back goals 21 seconds apart. Lamphere got one back with 2:54 remaining until halftime to make it a six-goal game at the break, and the senior tacked on another to make it 9-4 early in the second half.

Bedford was able to keep possession long enough and force turnovers when it lost the ball to keep Pinkerton from getting closer.

"We’ve focused a lot on creating the tempo and that’s something we did really well across all facets," Hodgdon said. "The defense was really composed with the way they transitioned the ball. We got the midfield involved. We did a good job of taking advantage of fast breaks if they were there, but slowing it down and getting into our settled sets if not."
