BEDFORD - When the Londonderry High School girls lacrosse team scored early in the second half Tuesday to get within three goals of Bedford, it sure looked like the teams where in for a battle the rest of the way.

But after the goal, the Bulldogs got possession, and never really gave it back.

Bedford kept the ball on Londonderry's side of the field for more than 10 minutes, wearing down the Lancers' defense before going on a 5-0 run in just over three minutes, as the Bulldogs pulled away for a 15-5 win in a Division I game.

Hannah McCarthy led the way for Bedford (6-1) with six goals and two assists while Riley Chou had three goals, Mackenzie Chou had two goals and an assist and Sydney Lynch added three assists. Mackenzie MacEachern and Chamberline Bell also had two goals apiece and Hannah Paradis made four saves as the Bulldogs won their sixth straight game.

"Our second half, we definitely picked it up," Bedford coach Christine Hodgdon said. "I think we were a little flat in the first half and we were just off with passes, our flow was a little off. The draw was going either way, they’d win two, then we’d win two. Second half we definitely did a better job."

Londonderry's Allie Marsh scored less than five minutes into the second half to make it an 8-5 Bedford lead and the Lancers won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over right away. The Bulldogs took control after that, forcing Londonderry into turnovers in its own end whenever the Lancers got the ball back.

While Bedford had possession for most of that time, the Londonderry defense held until McCarthy scored with 12:38 to play, starting the Bulldogs on a game-ending run.

"I think the off-ball cuts, like when we’d drive and someone would get two slides, one girl would slip behind a girl and we’d just feed it to her," McCarthy said. "We just finish really well."

Londonderry (4-5) got a goal and an assist from Megan Jackes while Marsh, Sarah Duarte, Grace Chicko and Jenna Stowell also had a goal apiece. Morgan Brutus made three saves.

"Defensively we played great," Londonderry coach Scott Waldern said. "We had to step up huge and kept them in check for a long time. We weren’t able to clear the ball. Too many dropped passes in the middle of the field. Then we’d go back on defense and eventually, we ran out of gas.

"They were doing a nice job of pressuring the ball and setting up the right pressure. Our girls were getting too tentative and instead of moving their feet and looking for the open man, they were trying to protect themselves. By then, you can’t see who is open. I think it got in their heads."

The teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the game, with Stowell tying it at 2-2 with 20 minutes left in the first half. But Bedford won the ensuing draw and went on a 5-0 run - including three goals in less than three minutes - to take a 7-2 lead.

Londonderry was able to close the game to 8-4 before the end of the half and Marsh's goal made it a three-goal game 4:14 into the second.

After Bedford had kept the ball on the Lancers' side of the field without scoring for a while, Hodgdon took a timeout with 15:40 left to help the Bulldogs regroup.

"We seemed like we were a little gassed and we needed a little break, to refocus and not force things," the coach said. "Let the game come to us and break down the defense, see what opportunities present themselves out of those sets."

McCarthy's goal to make it 9-5 was her fifth of the game, and Bell followed with her second goal just 25 seconds later. Riley Chou then made it 11-5 just 30 seconds after that, and after Bedford won its fourth draw in a row, Mackenzie Chou scored with 10:07 left to make it 12-5 and force Londonderry to take a timeout.

Bedford won another draw out of the break and Mackenzie Chou added to the lead with 9:16 to play. The Lancers were finally able to get the draw and advance the ball past midfield, but was unable to score, and the Bulldogs tacked on two more late goals to finish out the scoring.
