Bedford girls hang on to beat Hanover

BEDFORD - The Bedford High School girls tennis team needed every win it could get to stay undefeated Tuesday, beating Hanover 5-4.

The Bulldogs dropped the top two singles matches, but won the other four matches and got a win at No. 3 doubles to improve to 7-0 in Division II.

Bedford's Stephanie Johnson won at No. 3, beating Alex Bozuwa 8-2, and Jennifer Cutliffe took the No. 4 match, besting Kendra McGowan 8-2. Ellen Wheeler defeated Abbie Waite 8-1 in the No. 5 match while Katie Downer took the No. 6 match 8-0 over Carolyn Keller.

Hanover's Camille Hantel took the No. 1 match, winning 8-1 over Jacinda Williams, and Maddie Dewhirst defeated Mackenzie Phelps 8-1 in the No. 2 match.

The Marauders also won the No. 1 doubles match, as Bozuwa and Dewhirst defeated Williams and Cutliffe 9-8 (7-3). Hanover also got a win at No. 2, with Hankel and McGowan beating Phelps and Johnson, 8-4.

Those two wins gave Hanover a total of four matches, but by the time they were complete, Bedford had already won the No. 3 match. Wheeler and Downer got an 8-0 win over Sarah Bent and Lauren Slater.
