BEDFORD – The Manchester Memorial High School girls basketball team was ready to go for Wednesday night’s showdown with Bedford.

The Crusaders came out with plenty of intensity, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead.

But things quickly unraveled from there, as Memorial started turning the ball over and Bedford went on a run. By the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs had a 14-point lead and never looked back in a 73-34 win over the Crusaders in a Division I game.

Bedford had five players score in double figures, with Ali Glennon leading the way with 13 points. Nicole Tucci and Rachel Collins each added 12 while Brianna Purcell had 11 and McKenzie Brown chipped in 10, as the Bulldogs improved to 9-0 in the division.

With Memorial (6-2) determined to not get beat inside, the Bulldogs settled for jump shots, and made most of them, including two 3-pointers each by Glennon and Brown.

“They have a lot of confidence right now,” Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. “That’s half of shooting. We have very good shooters on our team. Just about every girl has a very good jump shot.”

Going in, Memorial coach Maureen T. LaRoche knew Bedford could shoot, she just didn’t realize how well the Bulldogs could do it.

“They’re probably one of the best shooting teams in the Northeast region for high school,” she said. “To be honest, my scouting report didn’t give them enough credit. They were much better than I thought they were going to be.”

The Crusaders got 12 points from Makenah Grisson, but no one else was in double figures and just four other players scored for Memorial. Jess Sweetser had eight points and Angelina Marazzi added six.

Marazzi opened the game with a 3 and Grisson added a layup on the Crusaders’ next possession to put them up 5-0\. When Bedford turned the ball over on its next time down the floor, LaRoche called a timeout.

“I was kind of glad,” Thomas said. “I was getting to the point where I was thinking I should take a timeout. We weren’t really rattled, but I was just getting to remind them to calm down and then Memorial took a timeout and I didn’t have to.”

It proved to be a turning point, as Memorial coughed up the ball on its next three possessions. Bedford went on an 8-0 run before a basket by Sweetser made it an 8-7 lead for the Bulldogs. But the Crusaders turned the ball over five more times in the quarter and by the end of it, Bedford had gone on a 21-2 run.

“It was the turnovers, it was the lack indecision, to know that it was going to be a long 32 minutes,” LaRoche said of the quick turnaround. “I think when you play a team like this, the short cuts in practice expose you. I’m not discrediting my team because they work hard. We played the upper echelon (Wednesday) and although we gave them a good fight early, I don’t think we were ready.”
