NASHUA - The Bedford High School girls basketball team went into Saturday's out-of-state matchup with Johnston (R.I.) not knowing much at all about the opponent.

That just meant the Bulldogs had to focus more on what they do best - pressure the basketball.

Bedford smothered Johnston from the start, giving the Panthers fits with its full-court pressure, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 67-28 victory in a game played at Bishop Guertin High School.

"I thought we played great," Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. "We know we have a good team, but we knew we were playing a really good team from out of state. We knew nothing about them and this was just to see how well we stepped up, and I was really pleased with how we played."

Mia Roy and Allison Morgan both scored a game-high 11 points while Clare Driscoll was also in double figures with 10 points, as nine different players scored points for Bedford (3-0). Alexa Dyer chipped in with nine points and Alyson Fillion had seven.

But it was on the defense end that the Bulldogs were at their best, as they forced 36 turnovers, six of which came in the game's first three minutes and helped Bedford take a commanding lead.

"This year, we’ve got a new press, and I really like it," Roy said. "The intensity that we start off with, it kind of sets the whole game up. We play off that and the energy just brings some extra spirit to our program."

Johnston got nine points from Gabby DiRaimo and seven points from Jordan Moretti, who left the game early with an injury. The Panthers (2-2) didn't score until halfway through the first quarter and quickly made it an 18-6 game.

But Johnston went almost six minutes without scoring, as Bedford built up a 30-6 lead. The Bulldogs pulled off the press for the final minutes of the half, but were still able to take the ball away from the Panthers and led 41-18 at halftime.

"We’re still working on our defense," Thomas said. "I’d like to see it tightened up a little bit more. We worked on that all week in practice. When we take the press off, I expect a very high level of man-to-man defense. For the most part, we’re getting it."

It was the third time in three games Bedford has held an opponent under 30 points, as the Bulldogs have allowed an average of 22 points per game to go along with an average of 71.3 points scored.

"All we knew was that they were state champions last year," Roy saidThey’re a great team and we just came out on fire. We treated them like any other team. I feel like the way we came out (Saturday), that’s the way we come out every game and hopefully have a good season."
