BEDFORD - Sue Thomas knew that no matter how big the lead was for the Bedford High School girls basketball team, it was going to have to withstand a comeback Tuesday night against Bishop Guertin.

The question was, how would the Bulldogs handle it.

When Bishop Guertin erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Bedford responded by hitting a few clutch baskets and forcing the Cardinals to turn the ball over at the other end to pull out a 48-43 win. The victory keeps the Bulldogs (8-0) undefeated in Division I this year, while it was the Cardinals' first loss against a team from New Hampshire.

"We knew they’d come back," Thomas said. "That’s when we learned it doesn’t phase our team. We knew we weren’t going to run away with it because they are too good of a team. We had to keep making shots."

Alexa Dyer led the way for Bedford with 13 points and Clare Driscoll added nine, as both made shots in the final two minutes of the game that helped the Bulldogs retake control of the game after Bishop Guertin (5-4) had tied it at 40\. Allison Morgan added eight points and Mia Roy had four points and seven steals, as the Bulldogs played without senior guard Alyson Fillion, who was out with an injury.

The Cardinals got 13 points off the bench from Bri Wilcox while Ava Owens had nine and Hannah Muchemore added eight. But Bishop Guertin was just 4 of 13 from the free throw line - including one that would have given it a one-point lead with 2:27 left - and the Cardinals turned the ball over 23 times as they struggled against Bedford's zone defense.

"They baffled us with the zone," Bishop Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. "Against good zones, you’ve got to take care of the ball and you’ve got to hit shots. We went through a couple of stretches where we struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter. We got it figured out early third quarter. We got wide-open looks, we just didn’t knock them down. We’ll learn from it. We’ll be fine."

Bishop Guertin was able to get out to an early lead thanks to a couple of transition baskets and led 14-7 with 3:34 left in the first quarter. But Bedford ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to tie the game, and both teams struggled on offense in the second, as the Cardinals took a 22-20 lead into halftime.

A 3 and a layup by Dyer to open the second half put Bedford up 25-22, but a 3 by Bishop Guertin's Erin Carney (six points) tied the game. Driscoll put the Bulldogs in front 27-25, but Owens tied it up with 4:45 to go in the third.

But those would be the last points the Cardinals would score for more than seven minutes, as Bedford went on an 11-0 run to take a 38-27 lead with 6:25 remaining. Kreick took a timeout, and after a couple of empty possessions, Wilcox started to bring Bishop Guertin back.

The sophomore hit a 3-pointer to break the scoreless drought and then added a three-point play to cut Bedford's lead to 38-33\. The Bulldogs took a timeout, but Muchemore stole the ball and was fouled on a made layup at the other end.

It stayed a three-point game as Muchemore missed the free throw, but made up for it moments later by hitting a 3-pointer to tie the game at 38\. Morgan ended Bishop Guertin's run by hitting a jump shot at the other end to give Bedford a 40-38 lead, but the Cardinals had a chance to go in front when Wilcox was fouled on a putback.

But her free throw was off the mark and Dyer scored to put the Bulldogs back up by two, 42-40\. Owens had a chance to tie it but missed the second of two free throws and Driscoll hit back-to-back baskets to give Bedford a 46-41 lead.

A basket by Caroline Hoffer with 15 seconds left got Bishop Guertin back within three points, but Morgan made two free throws at the other end to put the game away.

"We got ourselves back in the game, but it just takes a lot of energy to come back from 11 (points) down, and sustain that to close," Kreick said. "Disappointing loss, but great high school basketball game.

"This is what you want from a big rivalry game in the middle of the winter. The place is loud, there’s a ton of energy. You can’t beat the atmosphere."
