BEDFORD - When preparing for Tuesday night's game, Kevin Gibbs thought there was one place where his Bedford High School girls basketball team might have an advantage over Londonderry.

The Bulldogs coach felt the teams matched up well across the floor, but Gibbs thought Bedford might have an edge with Juliet Laws in the lineup. Sure enough, when the Bulldogs needed it, the sophomore was there to pick them up.

Laws scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half, including all of Bedford's points in the third quarter, as the Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter for a 43-38 win over Londonderry in a rematch of last year's Division I championship game.

“In terms of matching up with us, (Laws) was the one kid that we felt that we had a bit of an advantage,” Gibbs said. “The guards are going to balance each other out. Sammie (Sullivan) is going to get hers (for Londonderry). We felt that whoever was trying to defend Juliet, we had an advantage there. She was the difference for us.”

Sarah Muir added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Annie Zink had 11 points with two 3s, to help Bedford (5-1) bounce back from its first-regular season loss at Bishop Feehan last Saturday.

Londonderry (5-1) got 22 points from Sullivan, 17 of which came after halftime, and included a stretch where the senior scored 15 straight points for the Lancers. Brooke Eacrett and Brooke Wilson each finished with five for Londonderry.

“We weren’t ready for what we needed to do,” Londonderry coach Jon Doherty said. “We were ready for the thought of what we needed to do, but not actually doing it. I think this will give us kind of a shot in the arm, that we need to do these things,”

Bedford looked like it might run away with the game in the first quarter, as Muir hit back-to-back 3s, followed by back-to-back 3s by Zink, to give the Bulldogs a 14-2 lead. Londonderry got within 17-7 by the end of the first quarter and then started chipping away in the second.

While the Lancers struggled to score in the second, they were able to keep the Bulldogs from getting away, holding them to just two points to trail 19-16 at halftime.

“We started playing team defense, which we didn’t play in the first quarter,” Doherty said. “I think team defense in the second quarter, and even in the third and fourth quarter, was better. But we need to be more confident guarding the ball.”

For more than half the third quarter, the only points scored came on a free throw by Sullivan and a 3-pointer by Laws. Another basket by Laws made it 24-17 Bedford, but Wilson answered right away with Londonderry's only 3-pointer of the game.

Sullivan scored the final six points of the quarter, including a buzzer-beater that gave the Lancers a 27-25 lead going into the fourth.

“You never want to see another kid score, but the ball’s in her hands, it’s got a good shot at going in,” Gibbs said. “You just bring (the players) over, you talk and say we’ve got one more quarter to go, this is what we want to do. The kids executed it for the most part really, really well.”

Sullivan added another basket to open the final quarter to make it a 12-1 run for Londonderry, Eva Zink, who had been guarding Sullivan all game, scored her only two field goals on back-to-back possessions to tie it at 29 with 6:30 remaining.

Laws followed with a layup to give the Bulldogs the lead back, and then she capped a 14-2 run with a pair of free throws to give Bedford a 39-31 lead with 2:49 remaining.

Londonderry was able to get within three points in the final 30 seconds, but the Bulldogs made just enough of their free throws down the stretch to keep the Lancers at bay.

This game was the third meeting between the teams since the start of last season, and while Bedford has won all three, Londonderry has gotten a point closer each time. They'll meet again on Feb. 20 at Londonderry.

“I kind of saw it as this,” Doherty said of the way the game unfolded. “You never know. I think we’re just as good, but I think we just need to believe it.”
