NASHUA - The scene that played out in the second half Tuesday night might have seemed unwantedly familiar for the Bedford High School girls basketball team.

After getting out to its biggest lead of the night, Bedford watched as Bishop Guertin went on a 12-0 run to take a five point lead early in the fourth quarter. It was almost the same script the Cardinals wrote on the way to winning the Division I championship against the Bulldogs back in March.

Bishop Guertin's Meghan Cramb and Bedford's Maddie Blake battle for a rebound.

But this time, Bedford was able to pull off the rewrite.

The Bulldogs were able to answer Bishop Guertin's run with a 17-4 run of their own as Bedford came away with a 57-49 win over the Cardinals.

"Sometimes, it's just one possession and make one shot, that kind of gets you going," Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. "We couldn't break their trapping press for a while and the whole momentum changed. We needed to calm down.

"They changed their press and we didn't adjust, so once we were able to break the press, we got back into our rhythm and then we just hit a couple of shots."

The Bulldogs (2-0) also hit their free throws, making 6 of 10 from the line in the final minute to put the game away. On two of the misses, sophomore Kendra Barnard was able to get the rebound, despite being the only Bedford player on the lane, and kept the ball alive, forcing Bishop Guertin to foul again.

"Kendra Barnard is a sophomore in her second varsity game, and she got two rebounds, and not only did she not put the shot back up, (but) you're first instinct when you get the rebound is to put a shot up and if it misses, then they get the rebound," Thomas said. "She got it, turned around and kicked it out, and they had to foul us again. I was very impressed."

Jenoyce Laniyan led Bedford with 12 points before fouling out, while Ali Fillion had 10 points and Elizabeth Stevenson came off the bench to add eight points. Ten different players scored for the Bulldogs, including 19 points off the bench.

Meghan Cramb had 13 points to lead Bishop Guertin (1-1), which also got 10 points each from Molly Dee and Caroline Hoffer. The Cardinals also got solid contributions from its bench, including eight points from freshman Addison Smith.

"Disappointing that we didn't close better because I thought the kids did a pretty good job getting us back into the game," Bishop Guertin coach Brad Kreick said. "We got up five and then we just lost a little bit of that intensity and aggressiveness. We got a little passive."

After the Cardinals tied the game at 16 just before halftime, Bedford opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run, but Bishop Guertin answered with an 11-4 run to take its first lead of the game, 27-26\. But the Bulldogs came right back, going on a 10-2 run to grab a 36-29 lead on a free throw by Laniyan.

But the Cardinals responded on their next trip down the floor, as Smith hit a 3, and Cramb followed it up with a three-point play. Another basket by Smith put Bishop Guertin up one and two free throws from Meghan Donovan gave the Cardinals three-point lead going into the fourth.

Bishop Guertin got a basket from Hoffer to push the lead to 41-36, and it was a still a five-point game with 4:46 to play, as a basket by Erin Carney made it 45-40 Cardinals.

Bedford came back to tie it at 45, but Bishop Guertin retook the lead quickly on a basket by Dee. The Bulldogs tied it back up, getting two free throws from Alexa Dyer, and after Dee missed the front end of a one-and-one, Fillion hit a jumper to put Bedford up 49-47.

The Cardinals were still within three, 51-48, with 1:04 left, but a jump ball gave Bedford possession and Fillion made two free throws, starting the Bulldogs on their run to the win.
