BEDFORD - Kevin Gibbs had a warning for the Bedford High School girls basketball team.

Just because the Bulldogs thought they should win Wednesday's Division I preliminary-round game against Nashua North, it's the postseason, and no one wants the season to come to an end.

For more than three quarters, the No. 14 Titans played like a team that didn't want to go home, but then Bedford junior Allison Morgan took over.

Morgan scored 14 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, including three straight 3-pointers, to help to turn a four-point game into a 70-54 win, as No. 3 Bedford advanced to the D1 quarterfinals. The Bulldogs will host No. 6 Portsmouth, which beat No. 11 Merrimack, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

"We knew at the beginning, Coach was telling us, this is one of those games where you think you’re going to win, you know you should win, and you go out there, and we really didn’t play up to our expectation in the beginning," Morgan said. "This was one of those tests and we had to get through it."

Bedford (16-3) also got a big game from Amanda Jonas, who finished with 16 points, and Emma Rosenbaum was also in double figures with 13 points. The Bulldogs played shorthanded, with top sub Isabella King unavailable and with seniors Kendra Barnard and Elizabeth Stevenson in foul trouble in the first half.

"Emma Rosenbaum has been that kid who can score, but doesn’t always need to be a primary option for us," Gibbs said. "She had a great night (Wednesday). The girl can shoot the ball and with us, you have to pick your poison. Teams have left her alone, and what I’ve told her is, when teams leave you alone, you’ve got to put the ball up.

"Putting points up isn’t an issue for us. What happened (Wednesday) was that we weren’t as tight on the defensive end. They’re small and we’re trying to defend with forwards playing guards. We were getting beat off the dribble, and the help was there, but the help for the helper wasn’t always there."

Every time it looked like Bedford was going to pull away in the first three quarters, North (5-14) had an answer, as the Titans continued to shoot from anywhere on the floor and attacked the glass throughout.

Arianna Motivala led North with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jaden Smith added 14 points and two 3s of her own. Janessa Lofton added 13 points and Katie Carr was also in double figures with 10 points.

"We hit some shots, which we’ve been streaky on this year, so it was big that we did that," North coach Christina Bean said. "And also having the confidence to drive on them. They’re big and they have talented, athletic girls down there. The first time we played them, we went back and watched the tape, and we looked at it and said when you drove, you didn’t have confidence. Just have confidence and go for it, and they did it.

North was down seven points at halftime and 11 early in the third quarter, but went on a 15-5 run to get within one point, 39-38, on a 3-pointer by Smith with 3:20 left in the frame. Bedford answered with a 9-2 run to take an eight point lead, but a 3 by Motivala with 14.9 seconds left in the quarter made it a 48-43 lead for the Bulldogs going into the fourth.

The Titans got to within 50-46 with 6:35 to play but Morgan responded at the other end with a 3-pointer to make it a seven-point game. After a couple of trips up and down the floor, the junior nailed another 3, putting Bedford up 10 points and forcing North to take a timeout with 5:20 to play.

After the Titans turned the ball over, Morgan hit her fifth 3 of the game and made it 59-46 Bulldogs with 4:17 to play. Lofton got two of those points back with a basket at the other end, but Morgan found Saphia Mumpini for another 3, and after a Titans miss, Morgan went to the basket for a layup and North took another timeout.

"We let her do a lot of things," Bean said of Morgan. "She’s a talented player and we kind of took away her outside game, but she was able to get deep into the paint, and when we finally started stopping that, she hit from the outside. That’s tough."

With the game close into the fourth quarter, Morgan knew she needed to make plays, and it just happened to be those plays were open shots.

"The shots were open so I took them confidently, which I knew we needed, and it worked out," she said. "I think I was thinking about it a little too much in the first half, so I tried to play our team game and everybody stepped up."
