BEDFORD - It doesn't seem to matter how many points the Bedford High School girls basketball team scores this year.

Not when the Bulldogs have played defense the way they have through their first 15 games.

After giving up 10 points to Manchester Memorial in the first seven-plus minutes Thursday night, Bedford gave up just 13 the rest of the way, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 47-23 victory over the Crusaders. The win improved Bedford to 15-0 in Division I.

The Bulldogs looked out of sort offensively early, and Memorial took advantage by getting out to a 10-5 lead, but Bedford responded with 14-0 run that spanned the first and second quarter. The Crusaders (12-2), who came in averaging 60.8 points per game, didn't top 20 points until under four minutes remained in the game.

"We knew it’d be a hard fight, a defensive battle," Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. "It took us a little while to get going on offense, but because we played really good defense, it didn’t matter. We have to figure out the defense that’s being played, and once the girls figure it out, then we’re good to go."

Clare Driscoll led Bedford with 10 points while Mia Roy, Alyson Fillion and Allison Morgan each added eight points.

Memorial got 10 points from Haleigh Shea, but no one else had more than four, and the Crusaders finished without a made 3-point field goal.

"This team can shoot and that’s all we said," Thomas said. "They have a deep bench, it doesn’t matter who comes into the game, you have to respect the fact that they all can shoot 3s and for the most part, we closed out on them really well.

"We did a great job on Haleigh Shea. I can’t say enough about her as a player. She is an amazing player. The girls played her well and the bigs came over and helped. Everybody else buckled down and played defense."

Neither team started the game well from the field, but Memorial was able to take a 4-0 lead as Shea and Melanie Presseau each hit a pair of free throws. After Bedford had closed to within one point, a pair of baskets by Shea made it 10-5 Crusaders with 2:35 left in the opening quarter when momentum shifted.

Morgan came in off the bench for Bedford moments before Shea's second basket and picked up a pair of steals, the second of which she turned into a layup at the other end. As the quarter came to a close, Morgan forced another Memorial turnover and found Roy ahead for a basket that made it 13-10 Bedford at the end of the first.

"We started the game off well, we were executing our stuff," Memorial coach Greg Cotreau said. "We got a bit of a cushion and then we kind of relaxed. We failed to continue to execute what was working for us."

Bedford's run made it 19-10 with 3:27 to go in the first half, and Shea scored moments later to end the drought for the Crusaders. But the Bulldogs came right back, getting two putbacks in the final 30 seconds to lead 25-14 at halftime.

It was 29-17 Bedford early in the third when Memorial went on another long stretch without scoring, and the Bulldogs took advantage, going on another 14-0 run to lead 43-17 with 7:05 left in the game.

"The message at halftime was let’s come out and try to get a stop first," Cotreau said. "It starts with rebounding, where we got dominated on the boards. That resulted in four or five chances for them to score at the rim. That took a toll on us."
