BEDFORD - When the calendar flips to February, on some nights, it's just about getting a win.

That was the message Kevin Gibbs shared with the Bedford High School girls basketball team after Monday's 52-42 win over Manchester Central.

After the Bulldogs lead by as many as 13 points in the first half, the Little Green cut the lead down to four points twice in the second half, holding Bedford to eight points in the third quarter and forcing the Bulldogs out of their game plan.

But Bedford (8-2) made enough free throws down the stretch and held Central (7-3) scoreless for the final 90 seconds to hang on for the win.

"We let them establish the pace on us a few times when we really needed to regroup," Gibbs said. "A good opponent forces you into that, so that’s when you have to call a timeout or encourage your leadership to get them back where they need to be.

"Often times, in the first half, we got the ball inside. We knew we had a size advantage on them and getting the ball inside is something we should have exploited more. Obviously,(Central coach) Mike (Wenners) made a nice adjustment. Every time we were trying to put the ball into the middle in the second half, they were doubling. The problem is, on the doubles, we weren’t telling (each other) when the double was coming."

Allison Morgan finished with 15 points for the Bulldogs, which included going 4 of 5 from the line in the final minute. Isabella King added 14 points and Catherine Penick came off the bench to chip in nine points. Amanda Jonas also had seven points, including two key baskets after Central had cut the lead to four points in the third and fourth quarter.

The Little Green got a game-high 17 points from Jess Lewis, as the senior hit three 3-pointers, and Destiny Jordan was also in double figures with 13 points. But at times, Central struggled to finish possessions when it had a chance to cut further into Bedford's lead and the Little Green finished 6 of 14 at the free throw line.

"They played hard like they usually do," Wenners said. "The nice thing about this group is that you know they’re going to play hard. It was nice to see … you don’t want to get down 11, 12, 13 points, but it was nice to see that happen and see we responded. It’s just the untimely mistakes. We’re all going to make mistakes, but just learning from it."

Bedford led 23-10 early in the second quarter when Wenners used a timeout to try to help Central regroup. Out of the break, Lewis hit a 3 to cut the lead to 10 and the Little Green outscored the Bulldogs 12-8 over the remainder of the half to trail 31-22 going into halftime.

Central carried that momentum in the second half and got within four points, 35-31, on a jumper by Lewis with 3:07 left in the third quarter. But Jonas answered with a jumper of her own at the other end and Penick followed with another basket to get the lead back up to eight points for Bedford.

The Little Green came right back to start the fourth. A pair of free throws by Jordan made it a six-point game, and after a Bedford turnover, Erin Flurey scored to again get Central within four, 41-37\. Jonas answered at the other end again, hitting a 3 to put the Bulldogs up seven with 5:14 to play.

Bedford was able to keep it a two-possession game the rest of the way, and after a putback by Lewis made it 47-42 with 1:40 remaining, the Little Green were forced to foul. The Bulldogs made 5 of 8, four of which came from Morgan, to put the game away.

"We regrouped, we got them back to understand what would make us successful, and they did it," Gibbs said. "The people they were fouling are typically people who will knock down their free throws. Even if you’re getting one at that point, they don’t have enough time."
