DERRY - A lot teams that play the Bedford High School girls basketball team have to decide who they want to try to shut down.

Do they take away the middle to try to slow down junior Lana McCarthy? Or do they focus on the perimeter and try to keep the Bulldogs' outside shooters in check? Not easy questions to answer, if answered at all.

Pinkerton was unable to come up with one Friday night, as Bedford used a big second-quarter run to break open a close game and rolled through the second half on the way to a 78-52 win over the Astros in a Division I contest.

McCarthy led the way with 28 points for the Bulldogs (14-1) while Kate Allard added 25 points, with both getting to the basket and taking advantage of second-chance opportunities. Lyla Stein was also in double figures with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

"It’s a pick-your-poison type of thing with them," Bedford coach Kevin Gibbs said of McCarthy and Allard. "If you shut the two of them down, (Devlyn) McDonald has been scoring, Stein has been scoring, (Ava) Dubois can hit her shots. (Sydney) Grogan is shooting the best she has in four years. The kids are playing really well, which makes us harder to defend."

Pinkerton (12-3) led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, thanks in part to four 3-pointers, and it was 19-17 Astros early in the second. But in the final six minutes of the first half, Bedford outscored Pinkerton 21-6 and took a 40-25 lead into halftime.

Elizabeth Lavoie led the Astros with 18 points, including two 3s and 6 of 9 shooting at the free throw line, but no one else was in double figures. Kaylee Dupuis had nine of her points, on three 3s, in the first half while Emily Leonard added eight points, with two 3s.

As a team, Pinkerton, which was missing guard Sydney Gerossie, had one more 3-point field goal (nine) than it did 2-pointers.

"We are not a good enough team right now," Pinkerton coach Lani Buskey said. "Not having Syd hurts, but there is more to this game than not having Syd. We’re not willing to compete at a high enough level yet to compete with the top dogs. I think we can be there.

"I think we should be there, but we’re 15 games. I should not be seeing some of the things I’m seeing 15 games into the season, especially because I’ve been addressing this stuff. We’re young and we’re going to grow from this, but right now, we’re not good enough."

Bedford's dominance continued into the second half, as the Bulldogs outscored the Astros 19-4 to open the third quarter and led by as many as 30 points. Pinkerton responded in the final minutes of the third, ending the frame on a 10-3 run, but it was still a 62-39 lead for Bedford going into the fourth.

The Astros tried switching from man-to-man defense to zone and back, but nothing seemed to work.

"Once they went to a zone, we were able to dice that a little bit," Gibbs said. "Then when we went back to man, we have all sorts of sets that isolate Lana, or if they collapse, we have other potential counters off that. Our kids are really shooting the ball well."
