Bedford will take on Bishop Guertin Saturday night at Stellos Stadium.

Bedford High School football coach Kurt Hines called last Friday's 25-24 win over Keene the biggest win in the program's history.

On Saturday night, when the Bulldogs take the field at Stellos Stadium to face Bishop Guertin, it will all be forgotten.

"It was the biggest win in our program’s history by far," Hines said. "That being said, we have the next biggest game ahead of us. As good as we feel, we still have a lot to work on."

Against the Blackbirds, Bedford rallied from three deficits, including one of 12 points, and needed to come up with a big play on defense late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

James Caparell threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns, including a 33-yard scoring pass to Nick Vailas for the go-ahead points, and Caparell also rushed for 63 yards and another score. With Keene driving late in the game, Jack Terzian intercepted a pass by quarterback Lucas Luopa to close things out.

"A lot of people thought we couldn’t go in there after a long bus ride and beat a team as good as Keene," Hines said. "The more I reflect on it, to be down against a team like that, we talk to the guys about bending but not breaking, we certainly did. We bent and they put the ball in the end zone. Our guys kept fighting. That impressed me, being resilient."

Hines knows that this week, Bedford (2-1 in Division II, 3-1 overall) will be presented with a different challenge.

"Until someone else beats them, they’re the team to beat," Hines said of Bishop Guertin, the four-time defending division champions. "They’ve got decent size. They’re not huge like Winnacunnet up front, but they’re fast. They’re very disciplined and they like to hit."

The Cardinals (3-0, 3-1) are also familiar to the Bulldogs, even though Saturday will be the first meeting between the teams.

"They’re defense is almost identical to ours," Hines said. "They run a 4-4, base cover three. Keene, we had to plan for a lot of different scenarios. BG doesn’t do a lot of the fancy stuff, but what they do, they do well."

While the game will have big implications toward this year's standings, Hines believes a Bedford win could be even bigger down the road.

"The implications of this game go far beyond this year," he said. "It will have impacts on this season, but it may keep a lot of families, or have them start thinking, why are we sending kids away from Bedford. Why not just keep them here? They get a lot of Bedford kids. It will be huge. We’ve got to take care of business."

Saturday's game begins at 7 p.m. at Stellos Stadium.
