The Bedford High School football team has put together a remarkable season.

The Bulldogs have the highest scoring team in the state, the stingiest defense in Division I, and have won all 11 of their games this season by at least three touchdowns.

Bedford has trailed in a game only once, had a stretch 15 straight quarters without allowing a point, and haven't scored less than 30 points in a game all year.

"They are a talented group of individuals, but most importantly, they play selfless football," Bedford coach Derek Stank said. "That style of sacrifice that they’re willing to put out there has allowed so much success to occur. You look at our offense and we have not one guy who makes all the plays. You look at our defense and it’s not one linebacker that’s making all the plays."

The foundation for this season started about 48 hours after the 2017 season came to a close. After losing in the quarterfinals to Winnacunnet, the soon-to-be senior captains started getting themselves ready so that they wouldn't find themselves in that situation again.

"We lost in the quarterfinal game against the championship team by a two-point conversion," Stank said. "From that moment on, this team, they’ve been ready to go. They were in the weight room the next Monday, in the offseason, and all through the summer, they had their minds set on not feeling like that again."

Behind five senior captains - Andrew Twite, Jacoby Collins, Harrison LeGoullon, Ryan Toscano and Timothy Galamaga - who Stank said "established a tone for our program this year," Bedford finds itself playing for its second title in three years. The Bulldogs will take on Pinkerton in the D1 championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at the University of New Hampshire.

Bedford's pursuit of perfection comes from its head coach, who admits he's hard to please.

"When we’re watching the film and I’m seeing this mistake or that mistake, we as a coaching staff, we want to strive for perfection," Stank said. "We know it’s not possible, that everyone will make mistakes, but to try to limit those mistakes, the severity of them, the frequency of them.

"Get these guys to understand that yes that was good, but you are better. That mentality that we’re not just going to play to get the score on the board, we’re going to play to get the best style of football that we can possibly play. When you have that mindset, they become hungry to get better themselves."

Facing Pinkerton creates some challenges for Bedford, as the Astros will be the first team the Bulldogs will face this year that doesn't run their offense out of a formation where the quarterback is under center.

And while Bedford's defense has allowed the fewest points in the division, Pinkerton's is second best.

"It’s definitely an offense that we have not seen a bunch of this year," Stank said. "We have to go back to the film, we’ve got to have great scout team players, which I feel like we have this week, in order to give us that look. As much as their offense is different than what we’ve seen, the rules of football still apply."
