BEDFORD - The Bedford High School field hockey team has been working on a few things in practice.

Against Dover on Thursday, the Bulldogs got to put a few those things to the test.

Bedford overcame a two-goal deficit in the first half and worked its way back to force overtime against the Green Wave, as the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in a Division I contest.

Maddie Kiely and Lyda Denon each had a goal for the Bulldogs (7-3-2), with Teagan O'Donnell and Eloise Montagano recording an assist, respectively. Addison Wolfinger finished nine saves for Bedford, which tied the game on Denon's goal with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

After Dover (9-0-1, No. 2 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) had dominated possession for most of the second half, Bedford got a break going the other way. Montagano sent the ball across the circle fast enough that no one was on the other side of the goal except for Denon, whose deflection went up into the netting of the cage.

"It was over there in a flash," Bedford coach Anneke McStowe said. "We worked on that big, huge cross across the goal and a big hit in. Those were the things we’ve been working on most recently and they applied (Thursday)."

The Bulldogs had also been working on playing 7-on-7 in practice Tuesday, just to get a better feel for what overtime would be like. That paid off as well.

"We worked on a lot of 7-on-7 for overtime, so I definitely tried to remind them what we worked hard on in practice we needed to apply," McStowe said. "Here we are in overtime, so lets remember what we did Tuesday in practice. That’s what happens when you dig in, and you dig out, and you come up with the best game you possibly could have. Everyone played their hardest to the very last whistle."

Dover got two goals from Audrey Carter, both in the first quarter, the second of which came on a penalty corner with no time left. Hayley Tosh finished with eight saves for the Green Wave.

Despite going down two goals, the Bulldogs came out strong in the second quarter, as Kiely cut the Dover lead in half just 2:36 into the frame. From there, Wolfinger kept Bedford in the game the rest of the half, fighting off a flurry of shots by the Green Wave.

"Their goalie was fantastic," said Dover assistant coach Jessi Paul, who was filling in for Sarah Michaud. "We had them on their heels, so I was hoping we’d continue to drive the net and put the ball in the back. The best way to do that was to get the ball to Audrey and let her rip the shot, and let’s get the rebounds. Unfortunately, it didn’t work that way."

It looked like that might work for Dover in the final seconds of the first half, but a shot into the circle by Carter was chipped just wide by Gabby Anderson.

The Green Wave appeared to take the lead early in the fourth, when Anderson smashed a shot into the goal, but officials ruled the entry pass hit her foot first before the goal.

Moments later, Giana Leonardi had a great chance, but her redirection hit off the post and Bedford was able to clear the circle.

The Bulldogs had a chance on a breakaway in the final minute, but Tosh came out to kick the ball away and start the Green Wave the other way. Dover was awarded a corner with no time left, but again, the ball hit a Green Wave foot, sending it to overtime.

The teams went back and forth in overtime, with Bedford getting a corner after the final buzzer sounded this time. Tosh was able to come up with a save and the ball trickled out of bounds, ending the game in a tie.

"The season is not over," Paul said. "It’s halfway through and this is where the biggest grind is going to come. Who is going to dig deep and come out and play? This last little bit is going to be what matters."
