BEDFORD - Anneke McStowe emphasized short passes to the Bedford High School field hockey team throughout the preseason.

When the Bulldogs have stuck to that, they've been successful so far this season, including Wednesday.

After getting away from its game early, Bedford got back to it late in the first quarter and held Winnacunnet in check for long stretches of a 3-1 win in a Division I game.

Anna Putney had two goals and Regan O'Brien also scored for the Bulldogs (2-0), who never let up in the fourth quarter despite holding a two-goal lead.

"We knew this was going to be a tougher game," McStowe, the Bedford coach, said. "I told the girls they needed to go out and do the things they know how to do, which has been all the stuff we’ve been working on for the last two weeks.

"The girls started to do more big hits, which we’re not used to doing, and (Winnacunnet) was doing. We had to remind them to play your game the way you know how to play and that’s how we came out on top."

Sydney Grogan added an assist on Putney's second goal, which came on a penalty corner after time expired in the third quarter and put the Bulldogs up 3-1\. They carried that momentum into the fourth and continued to put pressure on the Warriors (2-1), getting three more corners and keep Winnacunnet from getting any real chances.

Abigail Williams finished with five saves for Bedford. Winnacunnet got a goal from Abby Wilber and five saves from Marissa Abram. Both teams had eight penalty corners.

Bedford took a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter on Putney's first goal and Winnacunnet nearly tied it early in the second on a shot that hit the post. But the Bulldogs were able to keep the Warriors, who had scored 14 goals in their first two games, in check for most of the half.

"I think getting the first goal was a boost of confidence," Bedford senior defender Victoria Falvey said. "We have a lot of strong players, but once we got that goal, the girls were talking to each other and we really knew where we were on the field more so than before."

O'Brien gave Bedford a 2-0 lead with 3:58 left in the first half and the junior nearly made it a three-goal lead moments later, but her shot went off the side of the cage.

Wilber got Winnacunnet on the board with 41.5 seconds left in the half on a corner, when her shot was deflected off a Bedford stick and into the top of the goal.

"Typically the girls will overanalyze that someone just scored on them," McStowe said. "But instead, they decided to move forward and do their game, which is short passes. That is how they are very successful. The fourth quarter, honestly, was probably their best quarter, which is exciting to see for a coach. The last quarter being the strongest is awesome."

Neither team could do much in the third quarter until the final minutes. Williams made a big stop on a Winnacunnet corner with a little more than a minute to play and Putney scored off a corner to end the third.

The fourth quarter belong to the Bulldogs.

"It was amazing," Falvey said of the finish. "We work so hard during practice and Coach McStowe and Coach (Kate) Gaudreau are great coaches and they use incredible drills with us that push us to the last second. The hard work really pays off in those last minutes."
