BEDFORD - The Londonderry High School boys lacrosse team went into halftime of Friday's game against Bedford down by just a goal and feeling good.

It took less than seven minutes of game time to change that.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take control of a close game, going up by as many as nine goals before the Lancers came back late, as Bedford won its fifth in a row, 16-11, in a Division I contest.

Brody Helton had five goals and two assists and Luke Purnell scored four goals and had a helper, as the pair had three goals apiece during the run that gave Bedford (11-4, No. 2 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) a 12-5 lead with 5:22 left in the third quarter.

"First half, I don’t think we played composed," Bedford coach Steve Gaudreau said. "I think Londonderry came out with great energy and worked hard. They put us back on our heels and we kind of dug our way out of it. We talked about staying composed but trying to match their energy. I thought we did that in the second half. We pushed ahead, had a burst."

John Purnell also had three goals for the Bulldogs and Bennett Matthews finished with two goals and an assist. Evan Capello and Cobe Rubin added a goal each and Cam Santos and Parker Gupta each had an assist while Ethan Conn made 12 saves, six in the third quarter.

That helped keep the Lancers (10-5, No. 8) off the board for almost a full 12 minutes, and while Londonderry was able to get two goals back to make it 12-7 at the end of the third, Bedford scored four straight in the fourth quarter.

"I feel like they gave everything they had," Londonderry coach Jimmy Ward said. "We were fighting for every groundball, we were in it, and battling. That’s the most important part to me, they didn’t give up, even when Bedford went on that run. They had a good long run there, and I probably could have called a timeout a couple of goals before, but I’m thinking we’re going to recover. It just didn’t happen."

Brody Campbell led the Lancers with four goals and an assist and Owen Huard had two goals and three assists. Trey Campbell added three goals and Colby Walden had two goals and an assist while Blake Thompson picked up two assists.

Broch St. Gelais finished with 12 saves, helping to keep Londonderry in the game in the first half, as the Lancers led 4-2 early in the second quarter.

"We came out on fire and little by little, they inched themselves back in," Ward said. "They’ve got the horses for that and we knew it was coming."

Bedford got it going right off the opening faceoff of the second half, with Luke Purnell scoring just 45 seconds in to make it 7-5\. Another faceoff win by Dylan Riccio led to another Luke Purnell goal 30 seconds later, and Helton scored just 57 seconds after that, to make it 9-5.

Riccio won another faceoff, as Londonderry got the ball back off a Bedford turnover, but Conn came up with a save to get the Bulldogs going. Helton scored again to make it 10-5 with 8:41 still left in the third.

"Scoring goals for us this year, we’ve been able to do that, but we’ve seen a lot of teams do a lot of different things against us," Gaudreau said. "Part of us is being confident with what we’re about and being composed enough that we can adjust to whatever defense is thrown our way."

Luke Purnell and Helton each added another goal for a seven-goal lead and Londonderry took a timeout.

"They figured out what we were doing and they corrected, and we were a little late to adjust," Ward said. "They figured out what we were throwing at them and how we were going to play them, and the flood gates opened a little bit."
