LONDONDERRY - Despite dominating throughout, the Bedford High School boys lacrosse team was tied at three with Londonderry in a big Division I lacrosse game for both clubs.

The Bulldogs closed the show by scored eight of the final 11 goals of the game to run away with an 11-6 win over the Lancers. Bedford saved its best for the game’s final minutes as it outscored Londonderry 5-1 in the fourth quarter.

The Bedford (7-5) offense was diverse throughout and was led by senior captain Kyle Fink. Fink had three goals and a pair of assists, including two big goals in the fourth quarter.

“We definitely got the ball working around,” Fink said. “We built ourselves up in the second half for sure. We came out flat which is unusual because it’s usually vice versa for us. We definitely started working the ball around, seeing those backside passes, drawing the slide, getting the dump to the crease. I think that’s why we got the ball working around.”

Senior middie John Cusack had a hat trick for the Bulldogs, and junior midfielder Ryan Toscano added a pair as well. Freshman attackman Dawson Clark had a big day with two goals and three assists. All of his helpers came in the fourth.

“Dawson was put in a position this year that not a lot of freshman are able to excel at,” Bedford coach Matt Guerard said. “He’s answered the call. He’s stepped up because he wants to play. He wants to be a contributor. He just doesn’t want to be another guy in the offense. He just hopped over 30 goals for the season as a freshman, You can’t ask for anything more from a 14-year-old.”

The Lancers (5-5) scored the first goal of the game and tied the game at two and three, but the Bedford defense held firm all game. Londonderry turned the ball over 24 times, compared to just 13 turnovers by the Bulldogs, and were outhustled throughout by Bedford.

The Bulldogs won the battle of ground balls 30-5 and won faceoffs 12-9\. Bedford outshot Londonderry 38-25.

“I think now we’re starting to realize when we get the lead we got to keep the lead,” Guerard said. “We can’t allow teams to crawl back into it. Those little things like ground balls, faceoffs, end up being extremely important.”

Londonderry was led on the offensive end by senior Connor Toth’s two goals. Sophomore Cole Keegan and junior Anthony Federico each chipped in a goal and an assist.

The star for the Lancers was junior goalie Ross Carroll. Carroll turned aside 15 Bedford shots.

After losing a pair of one-goal games, including a thriller against Exeter, the win helped right the ship for the Bulldogs heading into the final weeks of the season which includes road games at Salem and Bishop Guertin.

“I told these guys that we control our playoff spot,” Guerard said. “If we want to win out, if we want to win the rest of our games and get a higher seed, then we have to do our best moving forward. If we get into position where we control what playoff spot we get I think these guys can rise to the occasion.”
