BEDFORD - The Bedford High School boys lacrosse team just needed a little patience.

The Bulldogs were able to stay focused on defense, and once they stopped forcing things on offense were able to pull away from Lexington (Mass.) in the second half Saturday night for a 9-3 victory. The win is the 69th in a row for Bedford (8-0).

Dakota Clark had two goals and an assist to lead all scorers and Brandon Howe had a goal and an assist as the Bulldogs took control of a close game by outscoring the Minutemen (6-5) 4-1 in the third quarter.

"We just had to stop forcing our passes to the inside and be more patient with it," Bedford coach Matt Guerard said. "That third quarter was all about patience for us. It was just to slow down and run our offense, if it isn't there, set it back up and do it again. We had a tendency in the first half to rifle balls to the inside, thinking guys were open and they weren't there."

Samuel Stanton, Colin Hendrickson, Mike Vailas, Colby Gendron, Cole Johansen and Tyler Sullivan also had a goal apiece for Bedford while goalie Sean Tierney stopped 11 shots.

The Bulldogs also dominated on faceoffs, with Colin Cashin and Zachary Tucci winning all but two.

"They win all those faceoffs and we’re used to winning faceoffs," Lexington coach Dave Walsh said. "We had a lot fewer possessions than we normally get this year, so we weren't able to get a rhythm with our offense because they possessed so well. They took advantage of their possessions and got off good shot opportunities. I thought we defended pretty well but when you're playing defense most of the time, you're going to have trouble."

That trouble started early in the third for the Minutemen after a solid first half. Bedford took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but Lexington came back to tie it on a goal by Alex Lenrow (one assist) with 6:38 left before halftime.

But Bedford scored twice in the final four minutes of the second to take a 4-2 lead into the break, and then added another goal under a minute into the third to go up 5-2.

Jack Jenness scored with 9:21 left in the third to make it 5-3, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the final seven minutes of the quarter. Clark scored back-to-back goals to make it 7-3 and Johansen added another to put Bedford up five.

"We felt good about ourselves at halftime," Walsh said. "There's been an unfortunate rhythm of us not coming out in the third quarter and locking things down. We've had a number of third-quarter problems, and indeed, they come right out and score a goal right away."

While Lexington's defense was able to hold Bedford in the first half and eat up big chunks of time with its offense, the Bulldogs maintained possession more in the second half.

"In the first half, they were phenomenal with the ball offensively," Guerard said. "They were moving it around and chewing time off the clock. For a run-and-gun team like us, that's tough to deal with, but our defense did a great job. Our defense was patient and we communicated well. Our man-down was great."

After a tough game at Exeter on Thursday, which Bedford won 13-11, Guerard was pleased to see the defense bounce back.

"Defensively, (Saturday) could have been one of our best games all season," he said. "Coming off a bad defensive performance at Exeter the other night, we really stepped up the game. That was the biggest difference the whole entire game, the way the defense played."
