GOFFSTOWN - Despite all the wins and the championships, there were still nerves Wednesday night when the Bedford High School boys hockey team took the ice for its first Division I game.

For most of the first 15 minutes, it showed everywhere but on the scoreboard.

Although the Bulldogs played what coach Marty Myers called "mistake-filled" hockey, Bedford scored the first of three shorthanded goals in the first period on the way to a 4-1 win over Nashua North at St. Anselm's Sullivan Arena.

Brett Veilleiux had the first-period goal, and later added an assist, while Danato Tempesta and Nathaniel John each had two assists, as Bedford (1-0) won its 29th game in a row and stretched its unbeaten streak to 30.

Bedford's Matthew Giroux tries to keep the puck in the zone.

"For our first game of the season, I think, because it's so early, we made a lot of mistakes," Myers said. "Overall, I was happy with them. They came to play and overall did a good job, but it was mistake filled."

Griffin Gagne, Matthew Musgrave and Jacon Rioux also had a goal each for the Bulldogs while goalie Alec Lindberg played well.

North (0-1) scored its lone goal late in the third period, getting a power play tally from Ryan Marvin.

"We played tough," North coach Dan Legro said. "We have a light bench. And it was a big day for Bedford. They have a lot of experience through their whole team, and they had a lot to prove in their opener in Division I. It was a tough recipe."

The Titans dressed just 13 players for the game, but at times were down to just nine guys to cycle on and off the ice, something that contributed to two of Bedford's shorthanded goals.

"We were getting tired," Legro said. "At one point, we were running nine guys, and it was tough for us to have two lines. We had one guy home sick, we had our defensive captain who couldn't finish the game, and that hurt us. And we had one of our most talented players in the box for 10 minutes. Our guys were tired and we don't have a lot of depth at this point, and they keep rolling lines, it’s tough."

North had chances in the first period to take the lead, but Lindberg and the Bedford defense were able to stop any momentum whenever the Titans got some. With 6:15 left in the first, Bedford's John Flanagan went to the box for an elbow, and the Titans cranked up the pressure on the ensuing power play.

But Lindberg was there to make a stop each time, and Bedford was able to catch North too deep in the Bulldogs' end. Veilleux was able to outskate two defenders to the puck, and went across the front of the goal, beating Sean Chipman on the far side.

"It's a game-changer when you're down a guy and you score a goal," Myers said. "It's a big momentum boost for the team that scores and it's a back-breaker for the team that has the advantage and doesn't take advantage. To score a shorthanded goal in the first period, that helped. I think it swung the momentum a little bit because they outplayed us in the first period. Coming out a goal ahead was helpful."

Musgrave made it 2-0 early in the second period, with North again on the man-advantage, and Gagne put Bedford up 3-0 when he knocked a rebound into the net ahead of a diving attempt by Chipman.

The teams played a penalty-filled third period, with each team having at least one 5-on-3 advantage. Marvin scored on North's second two-man advantage with 3:57 left, but Rioux answered for Bedford just 1:40 later to lock up the win.

"It's something we've looked forward to," Myers said. "To have an opportunity to play in Division I, they were excited and nervous. The setting of the first game against a team we've never played against, it was a good win for our program."
