MANCHESTER - There were a lot of things Marty Myers expected to see during Wednesday night's Division I boys hockey semifinal.

The Bedford High School coach thought his team would be playing a physical game against Bishop Guertin, with only a handful of opportunities finding the back of the net. What he didn't expect was that the Bulldogs would be the ones getting all of them.

Top-seeded Bedford scored two goals in 44 seconds in the first period, then add another 11 seconds into the second, for a convincing 5-0 win over No. 5 Bishop Guertin at JFK Coliseum. The win sends the defending champions back to the D1 title game, where they will face No. 2 Concord at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at SNHU Arena.

Bedford's Colin Voloshin tries to fight off Bishop Guertin's Jared Zeichick.

"We knew it was going to be physical against them," Myers said. "We knew we had to play like that. Getting on the board early was certainly comforting. We wanted to play well early, not go down, and getting two goals in early kind of set the tone. We talked about trying to do the same thing and come out quick, so that was nice."

All five goals came from Bedford's top line, as Griffin Gagne had two goals and three assists, while John McDonough also scored twice and Jay Roberto had a goal and three helpers. Frederick Voloshin made 21 saves for Bedford's 11th shutout of the season.

Bishop Guertin's Jacob Perrin stopped 22 shots before exiting the game after Gagne's second goal made it 5-0 with 6:33 left. After a good stretch to end the regular season and open the playoffs, Cardinals coach Gary Bishop was surprised with how his team had its season ended.

"Our last three games, we played well against Pinkerton, we played well against Concord and we played well against Hanover," he said. "To come out and play flat was disappointing to say the least. We never clicked and they played the way we coach. Play the man and let the second guy pick up the loose puck. What they did to us, we usually do to other people."

The Cardinals (12-6-2) came out hitting and Bedford (18-1-1) answered the call, with each hit getting the student sections revved up, until Bishop Guertin's Chase Blazak was called for a cross check at 2:32.

Bedford capitalized, as Gagne took a feed from Colin Voloshin and buried it past Perrin to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at 3:40 of the first. Just 44 seconds later, McDonough scored on a similar play to make it a 2-0 lead for Bedford.

"It was big because coming in we were nervous," Gagne said. "Getting off to a 2-0 lead was important because it basically said that we have a good chance of winning and the weight was off our shoulders."

While the Cardinals were able to gain some momentum by keeping Bedford off the scoreboard for the rest of the period, the Bulldogs took it all back just 11 seconds into the second, when McDonough scored his second to make it 3-0.

"It definitely swung momentum on our side," Gagne said. "If they got the next goal, it's anyone's game. I think that took the wind out of their sails and we kept going from there."

Bishop Guertin had some opportunities after that, including three power plays in the third period, but Voloshin and the rest of the Bedford defense was there to keep them off the board.

"(Voloshin) is a kid that we rely on and big games like this, we rely on big players and they showed up (Wednesday)," Myers said. "I thought all three lines played well, but that top line did what it’s supposed to do. I hope that this isn't their best game. I hope they have one more."
