NASHUA - The Bedford High School boys basketball team won Friday’s game against Bishop Guertin in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs nearly lost it with their free throw shooting in the fourth.

At one point, Bedford missed eight of 12 free throws as Bishop Guertin cut a 12-point deficit down to five with 49.8 seconds to play, but the Bulldogs hit their final six foul shots to hang on for a 67-56 win over the Cardinals.

Joshua Koehler led the Bulldogs (11-5) with 15 points while Ryan Hughes and Josh Bauer each had 14 points. The trio combined to go 12 of 14 from the line in the fourth quarter - with Bauer going 10 of 12 for the game - while their teammates were 1 of 9 in the game's final 4:26.

"Missing free throws is contagious," Bedford coach Mark Elmendorf said. "We got on a roll there and we couldn't buy one. We missed them and that doesn't normally happen.

"At times, I thought we played really well. We had a couple of runs in the first half that I think helped."

The big run for the Bulldogs came in the second quarter, when they outscored the Cardinals 15-5 to turn a two-point lead into a 29-17 advantage. Hughes scored 10 of those points, including eight in a row that forced Bishop Guertin (6-11) to use a timeout.

"We went from down two to down 10," Bishop Guertin coach Jim Migneault said. "We missed three 3s in a row, and they came down and buried shots. The 3s weren't bad shots. They were shots that we can make, we just didn't make them."

The Cardinals got 17 points from Mike Rinko and Chard Olivieri added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Clayton Crowell chipped in with nine points.

Bedford looked like it might run away early, going up 14-6 in the first quarter, but the Cardinals closed the gap, ending the frame on a 6-0 run that made it a two-point game going into the second.

The Bulldogs were up four when Hughes went on his 8-0 run, hitting a 3-pointer to make it a seven-point game, then adding a layup and a 3 in transition to put Bedford up 12 points.

"We wanted to keep him in our sights all the time, but when he gets into transition, it's hard to find him," Migneault said.

Bedford led 37-23 at halftime and took a 52-38 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals opened the fourth with a 10-5 run that got them within nine points, 57-48, thanks in part to two 3s by Olivieri and Crowell.

The Cardinals started fouling then, and Bedford started missing its free throws. To make maters worse, the Bulldogs sent Bishop Guertin to the line at the other end, and the Cardinals made all six of their free throws to get within five points.

But when Bishop Guertin had opportunities to get closer, it couldn't execute on offense, and the Bulldogs finally made some free throws.

"We were chasing and fouling and we started pretty early," Migneault said. "We cut it to five and they hit foul shots. When they miss, we have to score, and we didn't score every time down."
