GOFFSTOWN - The biggest cliché in the basketball book has to do with making free throws.

And while there are many factors that go into who wins or loses a game, when a contest goes to double overtime, shots from the free throw line make a big difference.

The Bedford High School boys basketball team was perfect from the charity stripe in the second overtime Thursday night and the Bulldogs were 13 of 15 for the game, as they knocked off Goffstown 52-49 in double OT in the Division I preliminary round.

Bedford will host Trinity, which beat Manchester Memorial, in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Saturday.

"It’s been a couple of games where we hit our free throws and won," Bedford coach Frank Moreno said. "We knew these games are going to be a grind so we’ve got to make our free throws. We kind of made a point (Wednesday in practice) to shoot a few more free throws just in case."

Todd O'Connell led Bedford (9-7) with 22 points, including six in the second overtime, as he was 7 for 7 at the line. Joseph DeLacey added 19 points, with three 3-pointers, and Daniel Kulesza added nine points, including a 3 at the start of the first overtime that accounted for Bedford's only points of the frame.

"O’Connell came for us in the third quarter and got the rim a couple of times," Moreno said. "We knew if we could get inside, it would open up some looks outside. He does that, he finds a way. Sure enough, he hits his free throws. He really stepped up in the second half."

Goffstown (10-4) got 14 points from Rob Baguidy, six of which came in the two overtimes. Mason Blondeau added 13 points and Jack Kelly and Aiden O'Connell finished with eight points apiece.

But the Grizzlies struggled to make shots, scoring just six points over the final 12 minutes of regulation and going 5 of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter and first overtime.

"It was a great high school basketball game which we were unfortunately not on the other side of," Goffstown coach Ryan Cowette said. "Credit to Bedford for playing as hard as they did, knocking down the shots they made.

"It was one of those nights where everything we put up inside the paint didn’t go in. It was an unfortunate night for the ball to roll that way."

Bedford focused on trying to take Aiden O'Connell, who had missed Goffstown's last two regular-season games due to an ankle injury, and Blondeau out of the game offensively.

"The game plan was to face guard O’Connell and keep the ball out of his hands, because even if he’s not scoring, he’s creating for everyone else," Moreno said. "He gets into the paint, he drives the middle all the time, so we wanted to face guard him and dog him.

"Blondeau hurt us a few times, especially on the boards. They were outrebounding us a lot in the first half. We talked about that at halftime. We said the only way we’re going to stay in this game is if we rebound and get out and run. The boys stepped up in the second half and rebounded."

It took the Bulldogs a while to get going in the third quarter, as Goffstown turned a 23-16 halftime lead into a 33-20 advantage with 4:54 left in the quarter. But the Grizzlies wouldn't score again for almost eight minutes, as Bedford went on a 17-0 run, taking its first lead at the end of the third and going up 37-33 early in the fourth.

But then it was the Bulldogs' turn for an offensive drought, as the Grizzlies scored six straight points to take a 39-37 lead with 1:26 to play. A basket by DeLacey tied it with about a minute to play and Goffstown was unable to get a shot off on its final possession, sending the game to overtime.

Kulesza hit a 3 to give Bedford a 42-39 lead 22 seconds into overtime and Goffstown spent the rest of the frame chasing those points. Baguidy hit one of two free throws with 36.7 seconds left and Kelly scored on a putback with under 10 seconds to play to tie the game and force another OT.

This time, it was Todd O'Connell giving Bedford a lead, as his three-point play made it 45-42 Bulldogs. Goffstown tied it on another free throw by Baguidy and putback by Kelly, but with 1:34 to play, O'Connell was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws.

"When you claw back and force overtime and they come out and hit the shots that they did, it takes the wind out of your sails," Cowette said. "We continued to find a way to keep extending the game."

The Grizzlies were able to get back within one twice, but the Bulldogs made their free throws to set up a game-tying 3-point attempt by Baguidy. His shot hit the back rim and the rebounded ended up at the bottom of a scrum as time expired.

"Guard the perimeter, don’t foul the jump shooter," Moreno said. "We just wanted to make sure we jumped any ball screen because they run really good stuff. If they come off the screen, we know they can hit that."
