DERRY - There is never a good time for a high school team to deal with injuries.

But there is a good time to get those injured players back, and for the Pinkerton Academy boys lacrosse team, it was this week.

At full strength for the first time since mid-April, the Astros showed what they are capable of, getting out to an early lead against Algonquin, from Northborough, Mass., and maintaining it throughout the game Saturday on the way to a 14-6 win.

Ryan Lynch led the way for Pinkerton (8-4, No. 5 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll), scoring four goals, including the 100th of his career, as the senior appeared to be back where he was before an injury knocked him out of the lineup two weeks ago.

Matt Feole added three goals and Joey Gallo had two goals and two assists while Matt Morrison, who also had missed some time, scored twice for the Astros.

"When you have two of your top six offensive guys who have to sit out for any prolonged time, and we’re not the only one in the state in that situation, but we’re deep enough to fill spots," Pinkerton coach Steve Gaudreau said. "I commend the guys who had to adjust their roles, but when we’re full go, it makes a big difference. I think you could see with guys like Ryan and Matt back in the lineup, it makes a difference."

Michael Uber and Cody Santomassimo also had a goal and an assist each for Pinkerton while also Jimmy Erickson scored. Ricky Wong and Ronan Conners each had an assist and Curtis Michaud made 10 saves.

Cole Frank was 20 of 21 on faceoffs, helping the Astros to keep possession for long stretches, including the first half, when they built a 9-3 lead.

"Taking care of the ball more and utilizing the faceoff wins (has been big)," Lynch said. "We’ve been working in practice very hard. Slinging the ball around, really starting to operate as a team on offense more, definitely helped. All of the middies and defensemen pushing transition as well, helped us move the ball around. We played as a team on offense."

Algonquin (9-3) got three goals from Luke Harwich while Ryan Roman, Jack Battles and Jack Gulachenski added a goal apiece. Nate Gulachenski made 14 saves for the Tomahawks, who took a 2-1 lead early in the first quarter following a pair of turnovers by Pinkerton.

Gaudreau used a timeout after the second miscue and the Astros right the ship, scoring a little more than a minute later to tie the game on Feole's second goal.

Lynch netted his first two scores late in the quarter and Gallo made it 5-2 on a goal with two seconds to go until the second. Harwich got one back for Algonquin 1:31 into the quarter, but the Astros got three goals in a stretch of 1:08 to go up 8-3.

After the team's traded a few empty possessions, Lynch scored his third of the game - and his 100th overall - with 1:22 left in the first half to make it 9-3.

"Ryan scored his hundredth goal (Saturday) and it’s nice to have a scorer like that in your lineup," Gaudreau said. "As a senior, they’re not kids you can replace right away. He was close right when he got injured and he’s worked hard to get back on the field. I was happy for him."

The Tomahawks' defense stepped up to open the second half, keeping the Astros off the board for most of the third. Harwich made it 9-4 with 8:18 to play in the quarter and the freshman added another goal with 5:28 to go to cut the lead to four.

Gallo scored before the end of the quarter to give Pinkerton a 10-5 lead, and the Astros got a big momentum swing when they killed off a two-minute, locked-in penalty early in the fourth quarter.

Lynch made it 11-5, as he scored 22 seconds after the penalty expired and Morrison added back-to-back goals 22 seconds apart for a 13-5 lead.

"I thought we did pretty well," Gaudreau said. "At times, execution wasn’t there, but the last couple of weeks, it’s been a road back to getting everybody back on the field. I felt like that was the first game back where we felt like we’ve had everybody at a hundred percent.

"(Algonquin is) always a competitive team and they’ve hammered some teams. It was a good test. We look forward to the opportunity and any time you can get a Massachusetts win, it’s a good win."
