Going into last week’s Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament, the Cavaliers’ coach was killing some time by drawing up offensive sets for his team to try out during the break from its Division II schedule. As he worked, Soucy designed the majority of those plays to go to senior Miles Tobin. The move turned out all right for H/B, as Tobin averaged 14 points over the three tournament games and helped the Cavaliers continue to grow their identity. For his efforts, Tobin was selected as NH-HighSchoolSports.com’s Athlete of the Week. When considering to put the ball in his senior’s hands more often, Soucy wasn’t concerned about how Tobin would react. “He thrives in that environment, he really does,” Soucy said. “He wants the pressure, he wants the shot and he wants the ball in his hands. There aren’t enough of those guys to go around. When you have one who is like that, you’ve got to ride that. And he’s not worried about missing the shot, he just wants to be the one to take it.” Although he likes getting the ball and enjoys being a scorer for the Cavs, Tobin knows he can’t be the only one getting the points. “We have set plays for me, shooting 3s and taking it to the hole,” he said. “I think it’s good to have that experience and to have a couple of players who can score at any point in the game. “We had some structure (in the tournament), we had plenty of variations of different offensive set plays. If we run those, we pretty much our team can score at will instead of having everyone do something else.” A three-year varsity player and one of four seniors this season, Tobin has stepped into a leadership role to help along the Cavs’ younger, less experienced players, according to Soucy. “The greatest thing about coaching high school basketball is that you get to see these kids grow up,” Soucy said. “They (the seniors) are just terrific kids and terrific young men, and that’s more important to me than who they are as basketball players. It’s nice to see them mature and take responsibility and take a leadership role on the team.” Tobin is following in his brother’s footsteps in that sense, as his older sibling, James, was a stalwart on the H/B varsity during his high school career. But that’s where the similarities end. “He’s a very different player than his brother was and that’s how we want him to be,” Soucy said. “I think certainly, James’ accomplishments have motivated him to a certain degree, but I think he wanted to make his own way.” Having an older brother on varsity gave the younger Tobin plenty of opportunities to practice against players much older than him. “It definitely helped having an older brother, because I used to hang out with his friends and we played basketball against better kids,” Tobin said. “That’s how I got better.” Now Tobin is trying to help the Cavs improve to the point that they’ll get into the Division II playoffs. “We’re hoping to make the playoffs,” Tobin said. “We’re looking to get better on defense. We’re trying to limit our turnovers and run an offense. If we can run that offense, we’re pretty good.” The Cavs return to action Friday night when they travel to Durham to face Oyster River.
