Around the Granite State: Winnacunnet field hockey knocks off Merrimack (video)
Here are results from Wednesday's high school sports action.
MERRIMACK - The Winnacunnet High School field hockey team scored three goals in the second quarter to take control Wednesday of a 4-2 win over Merrimack.
Fiona McAfee had a goal and two assists for the Warriors (2-0, No. 2 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) while McKinley Fowler, Sofia Donatelli and Emily Arlington scored a goal apiece.
Riley Gagalis finished with six saves and Winnacunnet had eight penalty corners.
Grace Massey and Jordan Burns each had a goal for the Tomahawks (0-2) while Allie Wyand recorded an assist. Annabelle Cassetty and Sophia Richard combined for eight saves and Merrimack finished with nine penalty corners.
Exeter 4, Portsmouth 2
Jane Lyons scored twice to help the Blue Hawks get the win over the Clippers.
Emma Amarosa and Emilee Butenas added a goal apiece for Exeter (3-0) while Amalia Gloss made 13 saves.
No. 6 Londonderry 1, Windham 0
Gemma Murray scored the game's only goal to give the Lancers the win over the Jaguars.
Avery Callahan had an assist and Molly Tharrington made four saves for Londonderry (2-0).
Windham (0-2) got 14 saves from Sydney Rokel while Bayla Peretz, Emma Adamske and Lyla Filadoro played well.
No. 4 Keene 2, John Stark 1
The Blackbirds picked up a big road win in a crossover game against the Generals.
Scarlett Miller scored twice, getting Keene (2-0) on the board in the first quarter and then getting the game-winner in the fourth. Dayna Enlish had a save while Natalia Gillis and Zoe Allaire played well.
Nashua South 3, Manchester 2
Isabel Picanco scored twice, including what proved to be the game-winner in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers got the win over the Kings.
Picanco also had an assist, as South (1-1) scored twice in the third quarter to take the lead. Manchester (0-2) scored with five minutes left to make it a one-goal game.
Bella Hwalek also scored and Lilly Hurd made five saves while Emme Christian, Sofia Forti, Molly Mullaney and Maddie Langer played well.
No. 8 Dover 1, Timberlane 0
Rylan Howard scored the game's only goal and Scarlett Gray made eight saves to lead the Green Wave past the Owls.
Girls Volleyball
Hollis Brookline 3, Laconia 0
The Cavalier opened the season with a sweep of the Sachems. Game scores were 25-14, 25-14 and 25-23.
Nicole Kosakowski had nine kills while Tiya Miglani had five kills and four aces and Angie Dillberg had four kills and three aces.
Vivienne Turcotte recorded six kills and Harper Sarris had 16 assists and six aces. Dami Holman played well defensively.
