Around the Granite State: Exeter, Windham battle to a tie in D1 field hockey final rematch (video)

One scored early, the other scored late, and the Windham and Exeter high school field hockey teams played to a 1-1 tie Wednesday in a rematch of last year's Division I championship game.

Sophia Ponzini scored in the first quarter to give the Jaguars (3-0-1, No. 3 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) the lead and Annie Mitchell, who finished with 10 saves, came up with several big stops in the first half to keep it scoreless.

The Blue Hawks (3-0-1, No. 1) kept the pressure on in the second half, allowing Windham to cross midfield just once in the third quarter, until Lindsay Ducharme knocked home a rebound on a penalty corner to tie the game early in the fourth. Exeter controlled play for most of the quarter, but couldn't get another one past Mitchell.

It appeared Ponzini put Windham back in front with about a minute left in regulation, but officials waved off the goal after it deflected off a leg in the circle. Neither team could break through in overtime.

No. 8 Dover 2, No. 9 Keene 1

The Blackbirds had a chance to tie the game, getting a penalty corner with no time left, but couldn't convert in a loss to the Green Wave.

Sofia Miller had a goal for Keene (2-2) while Kaylyn Trubiano had an assist. Trinity Williamson made 12 saves while Katie Harrington and Alex Contaldi played well defensively.

Bishop Guertin 1, Man. Central-West 0

Central-West came up short despite getting 15 saves from Chloe Gilroy. Zoe Demers and Colleen Stankiewicz played well offensively.

Pinkerton 5, Nashua South 0

Jaelyn Crossman scored three goals to lead the Astros (2-1) to a win over the Panthers.

Alli Carney scored on a penalty stroke and Natalie Paradzick also added a goal for Pinkerton. Hannah Lisauskas and Paige Murray each had an assist and Elise LeBlanc made seven saves.

Kaitlyn Tello made 12 saves for South while Erin Flaherty, Karina O'Donnell, Maddie Berthiaume, Krista Reid and Wylie Hart played well.

Girls Volleyball

Bedford 3, Hollis Brookline 1

The Cavaliers came up short against the Bulldogs in four sets, falling by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 22-25 and 25-16.

Annette Schlunk had 13 kills and three aces for HB (1-1) and Cheyenne Colbert had 12 kills. Sophie Jordan added 40 assists and four blocks.

Rachel Sheppard had three aces and Maia Schneider had 17 digs for the Cavs.

Inter-Lakes 3, Portsmouth Christian 2

The Eagles fell to the Lakers on the road in five sets, with game scores of 25-9, 15-25, 25-17, 18-25 and 15-10.

Liahna Messier had 12 kills, four aces and seven digs for PCA while Emma Eisner had four aces and five digs. Madelyn Hardy added three kills.

Kailey Holt had 15 assists while Emily Esters had 16 digs and Heidi Geyer had one block.
