NASHUA - The Alvirne High School football team felt it could have success either running or throwing the ball Saturday against Nashua North. Whichever option the Broncos went with was up to the Titans. North tried to shut down Alvirne's running game early, so the Broncos went to the air. The result was a touchdown on each of Alvirne's first two drives and the Broncos dominated along both lines to beat the Titans 27-0 in a Division I West Conference game at Stellos Stadium. Danny Brown was 14 of 20 passing for 234 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, completing eight of those passes to George Notini, who finished with 114 yards and caught two touchdowns. "There were certain things that we were looking for," Alvirne coach Tim Walsh said. "We wanted to see if they were in a four or a five (on defense) and trying to see what their corners were doing. The thing with our offense, and the thing with a quarterback like Danny Brown, if you do this, we're going to do that, and if you that, we're going to do this. The kids are very alert and they pay attention to what's going on and they execute very well." Alvirne executed well on defense, too, holding North (1-1) to 41 yards in the first half - 20 of which came on a fake punt by Stephen Lambert. The Titans had only one other first down in the first half on a pass interference call against Alvirne. North struggled to run the ball against Alvirne's defensive front, averaging just 3.24 yards per carry, something that came as a bit of a surprise to Titans coach Jason Robie. "They put nine guys in the box, and when you do that to us and we can't throw, that's what you get," he said. "I thought that was what we were going to see, but I thought we'd move the football. The way you beat that is you pass the ball. We threw it a very little, but we had success at times, and other times, we didn’t do a good job. That’s something during the week we needed to prepare better for." Quarterbacks Colby Gunter and Jeff Baldassaro combined to go 6 of 16 passing for 60 yards and an interception. Connor Baldassaro led the offense with 57 yards rushing on three carries, and Lambert had a 22-yard reception to go with his 20-yard run, but no one else had more than 19 yards on offense. "We knew they were going to run that quick trap inside," Walsh said. "We assigned certain people to certain areas and we tried to take that away. Basically, we thought if we could keep them within the defensive ends and force them to throw, which is something they don't like to do, we had a good chance to win." After Jack Mahoney ran twice for 1 yard, Brown threw to the end zone, where Stevens made a diving catch to put Alvirne up 7-0 just 2:56 into the game. North went three and out again, but the defense again held Mahoney to 1 yard on two carries to set up a third-and-9 for Alvirne from the Titans' 49. Brown again found Stevens for a 36-yard gain to the North 13, and two plays later, Brown hit Notini for an 8-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 3:54 to go in the first. Alvirne might have added more points in the second, but an 18-play drive that ate up 6:49 stalled once the Broncos reached North's 21-yard line thanks to five penalties on the offense. Then, after another Titans' punt, the Broncos had an 18-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Notini called back on illegal motion. The Broncos went into the half with a 14-0 lead, but went on a nine-play, 80-yard drive and scored on a 4-yard run by Mahoney to extend the lead to 21-0\. Mahoney finished with 70 yards rushing on 20 carries while Ethan Rainville had 73 yards on 10 carries. Brown and Notini connected on a 42-yard touchdown pass on the Broncos' next drive to make it 27-0. "It's a big win for them," Walsh said. "This game goes a long way to establishing their identity as a team and as players and as a school. They really played well and they came to play. There were a few mistakes here and there, but I thought overall, for the second game of the season, the kids executed and played with passion and played under control."
