Ryan Martineau and Alvirne look to get back on track against Con-Val.

The Alvirne High School football team is trying to learn from its mistakes in last week's 35-7 loss at Milford, but at the same time, Broncos don't want to dwell on it.

After getting a chance to look back at the game, Alvirne coach Bobby Nimblett could see the difference between the two teams.

"When all the dust settled and we watched the film again, we had opportunities, but it would be eight out of the 11 kids, or seven out of the 11," he said. "It would be a blown assignment."

With Con-Val (0-4 in Division III, 1-4 overall) coming to town on Friday, Nimblett tried to hammer it to the players that if they work as one, good things should happen.

"Let’s get back to what we do and if we get everyone to fire at the same time, we’ll be in good shape," he said. "That’s been the focus, work together and do your assignment. If everyone does what they’re supposed to do, then the group picture will be good for us."

While Alvirne (1-2, 1-4) is the newcomer to the division, it's been Con-Val who has been a bit of a mystery this season. The Cougars started out the year running their offense from the I-formation, but have shown different variations of that since, and even lined up in the spread for one game.

The Broncos are expecting Con-Val to show up ready to run the football.

"We're approaching it as that they are a downhill, running football team, whether it's that stacked-I or multiple I formation," Nimblett said. "That's what we’re focusing on. They've had some good success. We're teaching the kids to be ready for (the spread), but we're getting ready for an I-formation team."

The biggest challenge for Alvirne will be slowing down Con-Val running back Chris Queen, who has rushed for almost 4.7 yards a carry this season.

"He's a true tailback," Nimblett said of Queen. "He's a kid who can run with power, but has good, deceptive speed. It doesn't always look like he's going full speed, but he is traveling fast. He has good hips. He has a good little wiggle to him, even though he's a pretty big back coming downhill at you."

Alvirne and Con-Val will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday in Hudson.
