HUDSON - It wasn't the start the Alvirne High School football team was looking to have.

Giving up a touchdown to Timberlane on the opening drive of the game, and then turning the ball over on their second play was not how the Broncos drew it up.

But then Alvirne started making plays, and by halftime, things were heading in the direction the Broncos wanted as they rolled in the second half to a 48-20 win Friday night over the Owls in Division I action.

The Broncos scored 21 points off four Timberlane turnovers, including a 75-yard interception return by Quintin Tetreault on the first play after a bad snap led to a lost fumble on Alvirne's opening drive.

Mike Landmesser turned in another big performance, scoring five touchdowns while rushing for 133 yards on 15 carries, and Charlie Crawford completed 8 of 13 passes for 200 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Yi. Ryan Rocheleau also had five catches for 66 yards.

"If you can get turnovers, whether you’re playing PeeWee football or the NFL, you look at the end of the game, if you have fewer turnovers, you probably had a good night," Alvirne coach Matt Lee said. "It’s such a momentum turner. You’re down seven and then all of a sudden you’re up."

And now the Broncos (3-0, No. 5 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) find themselves in a position they haven't been in in 20 years. The last time Alvirne started a season with three wins in its first three games was in 2004; the Broncos finished 3-8 that year.

Mlocek finished the night 16 of 31 for 236 yards and two touchdowns, but also had three interceptions, all of which Alvirne turned into points. Mike Santosuosso caught 10 of those passes for 163 yards and a score, while Spencer Brien had 51 yards rushing and a touchdown and also caught a 36-yard touchdown pass on the Owls' opening drive.

But the turnovers, penalties and other miscues ended up costing Timberlane (0-3).

"We made way too many mistakes to compete with a good team and Alvirne is a very good football team," Timberlane coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. "I thought we did a lot of good things (Friday), too. I thought we competed hard.

"The score is what it is, but I thought we got better in some areas. We had some kids make plays, particularly on the offensive side. Too many mistakes that hurt us. You can’t make those against anybody, let alone a good team."

Mlocek and Brien capped a 9-play, 80-yard drive to open the game with the long touchdown pass, but the pick-6 by Tetreault tied the game. Landmesser intercepted a tipped pass by Mlocek on the Owls' next possession and capped a short drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to give Alvirne the lead.

Timberlane tied the game at 14 before the end of the quarter on a 54-yard scoring pass from Mlocek to Santosuosso and the Owls made it 21-20 with 1:12 left in the half on Brien's 22-yard scoring run.

But Alvirne was able to go 65-yards in just 38 seconds, thanks in part to a personal foul on Timberlane and a 42-yard completion from Crawford to Rocheleau, scoring on a 2-yard run by Landmesser.

The Broncos added another touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, and after a one-handed interception by Rocheleau, Landmesser scored his fifth touchdown of the night to make it 41-20 just 1:36 into the third quarter.

"That third quarter was, I think, a good football team playing good football," Lee said. "We played a really good 12 minutes there. That was huge and then we scored on the first drive of the second half, and all of a sudden, we’ve got a little cushion."
