NASHUA – The Alvirne High School boys basketball team was in trouble.

The Broncos gave up a five-point lead over Goffstown in a little more than two minutes near the end of the third quarter and trailed for the first time since the beginning of the game.

But Alvirne wasn’t down for long. Dan Brown hit a 3-pointer 11 seconds after the Grizzlies went on top, starting the Broncos on a 10-0 run and a 51-45 win over Goffstown in Monday’s first game of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament at Nashua South.

Brown finished with 23 points, 19 of which came in the first half, and it was tough for Alvirne coach Brian Lynch to decide which points were bigger for the Broncos.

“I think Dan Brown stepped up with some big buckets to get us over the hump,” Lynch said. “I think he’s a phenomenal athlete and he’s underrated as a basketball player. He’s a very good player and what I’ve seen this year, he’s been looking great. A lot of people may sleep on him and not know how good he is.”

Brown scored Alvirne’s first 11 points of the game, as both teams started slow – Goffstown led 2-0 for the opening 2:41 – and helped the Broncos take a 17-8 lead after one quarter.

Max Bonney-Liles came off the bench to add eight points for Alvirne while Jack Brown chipped in with seven.

“It’s good to get the win,” Lynch said. “Goffstown is a tough, physical team. I was glad to see some of our guys step up and bang with them a little bit. I think that’s good for them.”

Goffstown had three players score in double figures, as Tim Comeau led the way with 16 points. Casey Gervais added 12 and Mike Bailey had 11, including three 3-pointers, all of which came in the third quarter to help the Grizzlies battle back.

And while Goffstown dominated the glass, missed layups and free throws, plus a few lapses on defense, hurt the Grizzlies.

“We competed, and ultimately that’s what it’s about,” Goffstown coach Mike Gasper said. “We went stretches, I thought, where we played great defense. We hedged screens, we talked switches, we did a lot of that.

“And then there were times we just let them come off the screen and shoot the ball. If you add that with the missed layups and the missed free throws, I can’t be too mad, because maybe we would have won by a few points.”

Dan Brown’s go-ahead 3-pointer in the third was one of those defensive letdowns for Goffstown.

The Grizzlies made it a one-point game on baskets by Bailey and Comeau to open the third, but Alvirne pushed the lead back to five, 37-32, on a 3 by Bonney-Liles.

After the teams traded a handful of turnovers, Bailey hit back-to-back 3s, the second of which put Goffstown up 38-37 with 1:48 left in the quarter.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Brown answered with a 3 from the win to put Alvirne back on top for good. The 10-0 run put the Broncos ahead 47-38 with 5:51 remaining in the game, and Goffstown couldn’t get closer than five points the rest of the way.

“That’s an example of that inconsistency,” Gasper said. “We just don’t get up on the shooter. We gave him too much space there. I could have driven a plane through there. We left too much space. That starts with the mental aspect of a game.”

Alvirne moves on in the winner’s bracket to face Nashua North at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, while Goffstown plays at 3 p.m. against Milford.
