DURHAM - The Goffstown High School field hockey team used its practice time before Tuesday's playoff game wisely.

The Grizzlies tweaked one of their penalty corners, and when they were in need of a goal against Oyster River, it worked.

Maggie Jorczak took a pass from Grace Murphy and moved a little bit to her right before firing a shot that found its way into the back of the cage, and No. 9 Goffstown made the goal stand up, as the Grizzlies knocked off the No. 8 Bobcats 1-0 in the Division II preliminary round.

Oyster River (9-6) had an opportunity to tie it at the end of regulation, getting three straight corners, including two after time expired, but couldn't capitalize, sending Goffstown (9-6) to the quarterfinals. The Grizzlies will face No. 1 Hanover (13-0-1) at 3 p.m. on Friday.

"They played hard," Goffstown coach Jess Brown said. "They were smart and gritty. There were times we were on the attack and times we had to sustain defensive pressure, but I felt they were keeping it together as a group and as a team, which I just think was really important, especially in those finally minutes."

The goal by Jorczak came with 10:18 remaining in the third quarter, after each team had a couple of opportunities to score to start the second half.

"We were really practicing this corner (Monday) at practice," Jorczak said. "We switched it up. We were all like this is going to work, this is going to be it. (Murphy) sent it right to me with a perfect pass and it went right in."

Goffstown tried to execute the corner earlier in the game, but hadn't been able to get it line up just right.

"I think we had tried to it a couple of times and Grace (Murphy) was trying to control it and get that pass off," Brown said. "I liked the space that Grace put the ball in, but it was definitely going to be a shot versus a tip. Maggie was wide open in space and she was able to generate that shot."

Molly Braica finished with six saves for the Grizzlies, including one in the opening minute of the game, while Oyster River goalie Brooke Edmond had five saves.

Goffstown had a chance to take the lead in the first quarter, when the Grizzlies were awarded a penalty stroke midway through the frame, but the shot by Makayla Strickulis was a little too high and went over the goal. Strickulis had another great look on a corner at the end of the first, but again, the shot was high.

After the Grizzlies controlled play for most of the first, the Bobcats flipped the field in the second and almost took the lead with about five minutes to go in the half. A shot on a corner was stopped by Braica, but the Bobcats got the rebound and sent a shot just wide on the far side.

"I think there’s nerves in a playoff game, and you add that adjustment to turf, too," Brown said. "Oyster River is a strong opponent and they played hard. I don’t think we thought it was going to be an easy game, but we knew we were going to have to make adjustments to turf, adjustments to what that speed would look like, and take advantage when we had opportunities."

The Bobcats appeared to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, when a shot by Ashley Harvey bounced through the circle and into the goal. But officials ruled the shot had been taken from outside the circle and wasn't touched by an Oyster River player before going in.

With time running out late, Oyster River set up for another corner, and fouls on Goffstown kept the game going, until, on the final attempt, the ball was knocked out of bounds, ending the game.
