For the 16th time in a row, the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team played on the final day of the spring season, taking part in the Division I championship game and winning the program's 10th title. The only thing that kept that streak from reaching 17 this year was a once-in-a-lifetime (we hope), global pandemic. With just under a year to go until the 2022 title game, barring something unprecedented or unpredictable happening again, the Cardinals should reach that number next spring. They're not the only 2021 champion that looks like it has a shot of repeating, as Portsmouth looks to bring back a young, talented roster that won the Clippers' first Division II title. While Trinity, the Division III champ, will see some losses to graduation and transfers, the Pioneers will be in the mix next spring. ### Division I The top five teams in the division in 2021 all face significant departures from their programs, so it will be a matter of how well they are able to replace those players during the offseason that will determine who stays at the top. Bishop Guertin graduates 17 seniors, including its starting defense, its starting attack and the top middie line, but the Cardinals will have the top faceoff guy in the state, JJ Murphy, back along with goalie Zach Connerty and Nick Dahl on defense. There is no shortage of experienced players to step up on offense, including Brady Dumont, Connor Bouvier, Tim Kiely, Connor Guibord and Aiden Laurendeau. After missing the final for the first time since 2012, Pinkerton will look to return despite losing 12 seniors, including a handful on defense. With Kyle Zirn and goalies Curtis Michaud and Tyler LeBlanc returning, the Astros have a good foundation to build on, while Riley Spellman, Michael Uber, Ryan Lynch, Liam Prescott and Joey Gallo will give Pinkerton plenty of options on offense. And after a stellar freshman season, Cole Franks gives the Astros another solid faceoff guy. Exeter (16 seniors) and Londonderry (21 seniors) will be both have a lot of holes to fill, but should still be playoff teams in 2022\. Bedford loses just eight seniors, but that includes two of its top players at attack and on defense, and there could be some losses to transfers as well. Concord should be a team that makes a jump next season after graduating just four and having a class of a dozen juniors this year. Merrimack should also be returning an experienced junior class while Nashua South and Souhegan will try to replace some key seniors from this year. All four should compete for a playoff spot in 2022. **Too-early predictions for 2022 playoff teams:** Bishop Guertin, Pinkerton, Bedford, Londonderry, Concord, Exeter, Souhegan, Nashua South. ### Division II While Portsmouth may look like the team to beat now, there is no shortage of teams that could end up holding the D2 plaque at the end of 2022, and with a return to normal scheduling, the division could be even more wide open than this season. The Clippers graduate a handful of players and will take a hit with transfers, as they always seem to. But with an offensive core of Dom Maldari, Michael O'Neil, Zac Amend and Dylan Roelofs returning, along with faceoff guy Nick Smith, Portsmouth should be strong offensively. Skyler Mikolaities in goal and Max Brown at LSM give the Clippers a base for a young defense. Derryfield will graduate some key players at midfield and loses all of its experience at goal, but the Cougars have young players ready to step up, starting on offense with Quinn Silvio, Chili Cabot and Alex Murray. Timberlane, despite graduating some of its top players, should have enough returning to contend again, led by goalie Brady Marston and Joe Shivell on defense, and Eric George and Ethan Gerry on offense. After a tough year, St. Thomas graduates just two seniors and should bounce back in 2022 behind an attack that features Marcus Broom and Anthony DiMartino. Although Oyster River-Newmarket saw some key players graduate, the Bobcats have plenty back, starting with goalie Finn Mason, to continue to improve. Windham, Winnacunnet and Hollis Brookline might take a step back as they each try to replace key seniors, while Kingswood, Goffstown and Keene should be competitive next season. **Too-early predictions for 2022 playoff teams:** Portsmouth, Derryfield, St. Thomas, Timberlane, Oyster River-Newmarket, Windham, Winnacunnet, Hollis Brookline, Kingswood, Goffstown, Hanover, Keene, Coe-Brown, Bow, Merrimack Valley, Manchester Memorial-Central. ### Division III Right now, this seems like the most wide-open division of the six in the state, with as many as six teams having a case as to being the favorite going into 2022. The leader of that pack might be Campbell, which returns a big junior class that includes Jack Noury, Brendan Boschi and Eric Coates, and the Cougars also have goalie Ryan Guerrette coming back. Hopkinton, despite losing seniors who contributed to the team's championship run from 2017-19, has plenty of players returning, including Ryan Brown, Ethan Molnar and Aidan Burns, to help it improve on its final four appearance in 2021. Plymouth, which lost to Trinity in this year's final, should have a good shot at getting back despite losing a handful of seniors. Goalie Jacob Marcoux will be back along with Joe Peters, Caden Sanborn and Mamush Tighe. The Pioneers take a hit due to graduation and transfers, but with Ethan Flanagan, Mike Evans, Matt Miclette and goalie Nick Guerra returning, Trinity will be in the mix. Laconia, Lebanon and Kearsarge each had young teams that got valuable experience in 2021 and should continue to improve with another year of play. Pelham and Gilford should have enough to compete for playoff spots as well. **Too-early predictions for 2022 playoff teams:** Campbell, Hopkinton, Plymouth, Laconia, Lebanon, Trinity, Kearsarge, Pelham, Gilford. Only 37 weeks until the start of practice for the 2022 season.
