The move worked, as Cameron Fagan scored what proved to be the game-winner with 2:43 left in the second period and goalie Jacob Perrin thwarted several Bedford chances as the Cardinals won 2-1 Wednesday night at Skate 3. Justin Pearson also had a goal for Bishop Guertin (11-1) while Chase Blazak and Joseph Leahy each had an assist. Perrin finished with 20 saves, including a few key ones in the second period when Bedford (10-2) had the Cardinals on their heels. The win puts Bishop Guertin alone in first place in Division I. "They outplayed us in the second and Perrin stood on his head," Bishop said of his goalie. "In that second period, I thought he made three saves that really made the difference in the game. "The first (power play) group they were shutting down because they were shutting off Pearson and (Benjamin) Peterson and they cut them off. We threw them out because the other one wasn't working. They hadn't seen that one because we don't use that formation a lot." Both teams had used their special teams quite a bit to that point, as a combined seven penalties were called in the first period, and both teams scored in the first on a 5-on-3 advantage. "I think both teams were a little hyped up for the game and both teams were ready for each other," Bedford coach Marty Myers said. "I think some of that excitement turned into those penalty minutes. I don't think either team could get into a flow of the game. I think the referees did a good job settling both teams down. When we were five-on-five, we started playing better hockey." Pearson made 1-0 with 7:04 left in the frame, beating Bedford goalie Frederick Voloshin (12 saves). The Bulldogs were able to tie it up with 24.5 seconds left in the period. Tyler Gamble was able to gather the rebound with plenty of space to move, and his shot got by Perrin, who had just returned to the crease, to tie the game going into the second. Bedford had a great chance to take the lead in the opening minute of the second, but Perrin stopped the initial shot and then dove across the goal to save the second. The Bulldogs' Colin Voloshin had shorthanded breakaway a minute later, but his shot missed the net. The Cardinals didn't break, and after Bedford took a penalty with 4:02 left in the second, Bishop sent out his second power play unit. Although Voloshin was screened on Fagan's shot, the goalie was still able to get a piece of the puck, but the shot hit the post and went in. "We gave them too many opportunities in the second but in the third, we had a number of scoring chances ourselves," Bishop said. "We shut them down when we had to." The Bulldogs went on the power play early in the third period after Bishop Guertin's Jacob Rodrigue was called for a trip, but it lasted just 36 seconds when Bedford's Grant Lavigne was called for a trip if his own. Bedford had one more power-play opportunity when Bishop Guertin took a penalty with 2:39 remaining, but the Bulldogs couldn't get much going. They finished with just three shots in the period. "We had 12 shots (in the first period) and we wanted to actually increase the shot count," Myers said. "Taking a penalty and not capitalizing on a power play is not what we wanted." Both teams return to the ice Saturday, as Bedford heads to St. Thomas and Bishop Guertin hosts Hanover.
