The Bishop Guertin girls indoor track team is no stranger to Class L success. The Cardinals won their eighth-straight indoor title this year, besting second-place Manchester Central by 12 points.

Editor’s note: With the winter high school season all done, it’s time to take a look back at how the season unfolded in track, wrestling and swimming.

The Bishop Guertin girls indoor track team is no stranger to Class L success. The Cardinals won their eighth-straight indoor title this year, besting second-place Manchester Central by 12 points.

But the BG boys? Well, they got in on the act this year, too, winning their first Class L indoor title. The Cardinals edged Merrimack by two points to take their first crown.

Michael Peret was a one-man show for the Souhegan boys, as he had a hand in four first-place finishes and helped the Sabers tie Lebanon for the Class IMS title.

The Milford girls looked like they were going to make it two straight Class IMS titles, but came up a second short in the final relay to place second behind Lebanon.

Wrestling

Milford’s Josh Kilgore was the lone champion on the division level, winning 189-pounds at the Division II meet. Teammate Joe Albina (160) and Hollis/Brookline Bryan Jennings (215) also made the finals of their respective weight classes.

In Division I, only two wrestlers, Merrimack Tyler Baulier (215) and Bishop Guertin’s Corey Christie (152), reached the finals. Baulier went on to win his weight class at the Meet of Champions.

Swimming

The Bishop Guertin boys team took home its second-straight Division I title, while Nashua North was second for the second straight year. The Titans girls team also came in second.

For the third-straight season, the Souhegan girls team finished second, while the Souhegan boys took home third at the Division II meet.

Eight Class L championships in a row should do that, right?

The Cardinals won an eighth consecutive Class L indoor track title on Sunday at Dartmouth College, recording 78 points to finish ahead of Manchester Central (66) and Londonderry (55). Merrimack (52) was fourth and Exeter (41) took fifth. Nashua North (23) tied for sixth and Alvirne (six) came in 11th.

BG’s run is the longest such streak in New Hampshire girls indoor track. In state history, only the Nashua High boys indoor track team has a longer streak of consecutive championships, having won 13 in a row from 1959 to 1971, when there was only one classification.

One other indoor program can match the Cardinals’ stretch – the Londonderry boys won eight straight Class L indoor titles from 1995 to 2002. Hanover’s girls outdoor track program also won eight straight Class I titles from 1986 to 1993, while the Nashua boys (1964 to 1971) and the Londonderry boys (1995 to 2002) also won eight straight Class L outdoor titles.

The Cardinals did enough in the relays to hold off a late Tomahawks’ charge, pulling out an 80-78 win for the school’s first boys indoor track title.
The 4×400 relay team of Reagan, Jonathan Jimenez, Tom Duda and Chaz Myers finished first in 3:31.93, just a second off the Class L record and almost four seconds ahead of second-place Dover. Myers and Jimenez also joined Steve Alario and Brody Williams to win the 4×200 (1:34.51).

Devin Martin won the long jump (21-2) and was third high jump (6-0) while Duda was second in the high jump (6-0) and Chase Distasio finished sixth in the high jump (5-4) and was fifth in the long jump (18-11 3/4).

It all came down to the final event, and when it was over, the Milford girls track team came up less than a second short of its second straight title.

The Spartans finished four-tenths of a second behind Hollis/Brookline in the 4×200-meter relay to finish third in the event and wound up one point short of first-place Lebanon (53-52) at the Class IMS girls track championship at Dartmouth College Sunday.

Bow came in third with 33 points while Hopkinton (31) was fourth and Coe-Brown (24 1/2) came in fifth. Souhegan (12) finished 10th and Hollis/Brookline (11) was 13th.

Going into the final four events, Lebanon was in first with 32 points, four ahead of Bow and six ahead of Milford. But second-place finishes by Courtney Hawkins in the 1,500 (4:57.34) and Briana Corron in the long jump (16-6 3/4) gave Milford 42 points and a lead of nine over Lebanon.

After Lebanon won the 4×400 relay, Milford’s lead was just three points. The Raiders also won the 4×200, and the 10 points pushed them in front; the third-place finish by the Spartans netted them six points, while second would have been eight.

Milford’s Cassie Sebas, Courtney Hawkins, Dina Pitsas and Peggy Lai took first in the 4×800 relay (9:50.36), besting the class record, which was set by Souhegan in 2007, by more than five seconds.

Corron also finished third in the 55-meter dash (7.48) and teamed with Sebas, Jillian Holmes and Jessica Krafft for third in the 4×200 (1:52.54).

Cecelia Muller and Amanda Clark tied for fourth in the high jump (4-10) while Lai took fourth in the 3,000 (11:04.27). The Milford relay team of Pitsas, Sebas, Muller and Hannah Ladeau also finished fourth in 4×400 (4:22.57) .

Isabella Stuopis came in third in the shot put (34-9 1/2) for Souhegan, while Hillary Wilson took fourth in the 1,000 (3:15.4).

Julia Bury finished fifth in the shot put (32-3 1/2) for Hollis/Brookline while Megan Kagenski, Devin MacDonald, Ashlee Daoust and Lyndsay Vasquez finished second in the 4×200 relay (1:52.14).
