Playoffs: Rough night for the locals

Thursday was not a good night for Greater Nashua girls basketball teams. Four teams participated in quarterfinal games and all four lost, two of them on their home floors.

In Class L, Nashua North and Bishop Guertin both fell at the hands of higher seeds, while in Class I, Souhegan and Hollis/Brookline each dropped playoff games at home.

H/B, the No. 4 seed in Class I, saw one of its best seasons come to an end with a 55-48 loss to No. 5 St. Thomas. The Cavaliers (16-4) led by as many as nine in the first half and had a six-point lead at halftime. But a scoreless drought that lasted over six minutes at the start of the third quarter, and foul trouble for several players, proved to be too much to overcome.

Also in Class I, No. 3 Souhegan fell at home to No. 6 Kennett, 50-48, despite holding a 32-19 lead at halftime. The Eagles got 34 points from junior Allie Wagner and held the Sabers (17-3) to just 16 points in the second half.

North, the No. 6 seed in Class L, went on the road to face No. 3 Londonderry and came away with a 54-33 loss. For the Titans (12-8), it was the first trip to the quarterfinals in program history.

Eighth-seeded Bishop Guertin fell to top-seed and undefeated Winnacunnet, 66-32. The Cardinals played well, but just had the misfortune of running into a team that has won 46 straight games and is going for its fourth straight Class L title.
