The Hollis/Brookline High School girls basketball team advanced to the Class I quarterfinals for the first time thanks to an opening-round win over Merrimack Valley.

Sultana Svirk led the fourth-seeded Cavaliers with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Kelly Morgan and Alicia Papineau had nine points apiece for H/B (16-3). Megan Hardiman led No. 13 Merrimack Valley (10-9) with 15 points.

The win moves the Cavs into the second round for the first time since they moved up to Class I in 2003. H/B will host No. 5 St. Thomas on Thursday at 7 p.m., with the winner moving on to the semifinals at Southern New Hampshire University on March 8.
Also in Class I, No. 3 Souhegan advanced with a 66-53 win over Bedford. Jane White scored 28 points and Christan Wojtas added 19 in the win. The Sabers (17-2) will take on No. 6 Kennett, also at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Amherst.
For the second straight year, No. 16 Milford (5-14) lost on the road at No. 1 Lebanon (18-0), 69-42. Dina Pitsas had 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Spartans.
In Class L, the sixth-seeded Nashua North girls picked up their first tournament win, defeating No. 11 Alvirne 59-31.
The Titans await the winner of No. 3 Londonderry and No. 14 Merrimack. That game was postponed and will be played Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Londonderry.
No. 8 Bishop Guertin pulled out a 58-51 win over No. 9 Exeter to earn the right to play top-seeded and undefeated Winnacunnet in the quarterfinals.
