Four local teams – Alvirne, Hollis/Brookline, Nashua North and Bishop Guertin – advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division I girls volleyball tournament Wednesday, while only three of the seven boys and girls soccer teams in action advanced past the first round.
Alvirne, the highest seeded volleyball team of the bunch at No. 4, knocked off No. 13 Dover 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in the first round of the Division I tourney. The Broncos (15-4), who were led by Katie Donovan and DJ Purcell, will take on No. 5 Pinkerton (15-4) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Alvirne.
No. 6 Hollis/Brookline won its first playoff match in Division I, besting No. 11 Nashua South (8-11) in three games, 25-17, 25-14, 25-20. The Cavaliers (14-5) got solid play from Kristyn Glover, Ari Creighton, Julia Stopera and Kelsey Berry. H/B will take on No. 3 Salem (16-3) on the road in the quarterfinals Saturday at 6 p.m.
Rebecca Noyes and Natalie Wingate helped lead No. 7 Bishop Guertin (14-5) to a 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 13-25, 25-21, 15-7) win over No. 10 Goffstown. The Cardinals will travel to Rochester to take on No. 2 Spaulding (18-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
No. 8 Nashua North held off No. 9 Merrimack, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, to advance to the quarterfinals. The Titans (12-7), who were led by Melissa Stewart, Katie Bonnette and Katie Przystac, will face defending-champion and top seed Londonderry (19-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Boys Soccer
No. 3 Souhegan moved on to the Division II quarterfinals by beating No. 14 Windham 2-1. Lucas Aveling and Cameron Quinn both scored goals in the second half to help the Sabers (14-1-2) advance to the next round, where they’ll face No. 6 Lebanon at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Amherst. Lebanon advanced by beating No. 11 Hollis/Brookline, 3-0.
No. 4 Bedford knocked off No. 13 Con-Val, 4-1, in the Bulldogs first playoff appearance in team history. Bedford (14-2-1) will host No. 5 Goffstown in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Girls Soccer
In Division I, all three local teams that were in action were eliminated Wednesday. No. 8 Bishop Guertin was knocked off by No. 9 Concord, 2-1, while No. 11 Alvirne fell to No. 6 Londonderry 3-1, and No. 12 Merrimack was crushed by No. 5 Manchester Central, 8-1.
Hollis/Brookline, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, recevied a bye in the first round and will take on No. 7 Pinkerton at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hollis.
In Division IV, No. 7 Wilton-Lyndeborough topped No. 10 Nashua Christian 4-0. The Warriors (12-5), who got two goals from Sadie Zavgren, move on to face No. 2 Gorham on the road at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
