Cardinals win battle of depleted squads

Bishop Guertin's Sean McClung throws up a layup during a game on Monday.

The BST Southern Division continued its boys basketball summer schedule Monday night with a doubleheader at the Muldoon Center at Rivier College in Nashua.

A matchup between Bishop Guertin High School and Milford High School would have any New Hampshire basketball fan drooling, if it were taking place during the regular season. But even with the Spartans missing three of their four returning starters from last season, and with half of the regular 18 players who have been participating for the Cardinals, Monday’s game was still entertaining.

BG led  at halftime, Milford closed the gap in the second half, but the Cardinals were too much, winning 52-39. That leaves BG (3-0) as the only undefeated team in the division, while Milford falls to 2-1.

Logan Kesty led all scorers with 21 for the Cardinals, while Sean McClung had 11 points. Milford’s Jamie Holder and Ben Smithe had nine points each for the Spartans.

In the first game of the night, Groton-Dunstable Regional High School defeated Hollis/Brookline High School, 69-45. The Cavaliers led late in the first half, but a long scoreless drought that spanned both halves proved to be H/B’s undoing.

Connor Zingales led the Cavs (1-2) with 17 points while James Wilson had 10 points and Cam Staplefeld had seven.

All four teams return to action next week, as H/B plays Alvirne and Milford takes on Windham on Monday, while BG faces Souhegan and GDRHS plays Nashua North on Wednesday.
